private listing - tool to see final price?

I continue to see some blatant shill bidding, sometimes with a history going back years (shown by feedback), even without the seller resorting to private listings, to try to cover their tracks. How many sellers are shill bidding AND using private listings to cover their trail is anyone's guess, but I continue to see some strange bidding patterns and amounts and for this reason, I avoid private listings. :shocked:hatewashingmachines wrote: »Thats shill bidding and I had a friend who stupidly did that.... got her husband to bid on something but eBay find out, they check your IP address etc so not worth doing.
Why tell them what and when you are selling on ebay? Just change your ID and don't tell them your business. They'll soon grow bored of trying to work out which items and ID are yours.hatewashingmachines wrote: »But the PRIVATE listing does stop people noseying..... there are plenty of relatives and friends who would love to snoop at how much I have got for things.
Essentially you are withholding market information, so that only the seller has access to this and not the buyers, who have to guess the market price ... or buy from another seller. :think:hatewashingmachines wrote: »Another reason for use of private auctions is to stop people seeing how much your other item went for, very useful if you are selling lots of the same item as this can lower the selling price, people look see how much it sold for and then bid around that price
But none of these reasons are in the interests of anyone but the seller, who the bidders and buyer can do nothing more than *hope* is not shill bidding, using 2 different IP addresses. This patently leaves the door wide open to shill bidding fraudhatewashingmachines wrote: »So don't be fooled into thinking its just for people to hide the ID's so they can bid on their own..... there are also some very valid reasons!!
If ebay were really serious about "Trust and Safety", they would have stopped private listings long ago. Personally, I only buy from a seller with transparent prices, transprent bids and a transparent history - and after having had a good look through these."The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing.
