I agree with the 2 posters above about the optical mouse. An optical mouse works by taking and comparing hundreds of pictures a second of the surface its being used on to determine how your moving it. There are no moving parts, and the sensor is behind a plastic shield which means it cant get dirty like your ball and roller mouse does. This means that you can use it for years without cleaning it and it'll still be as precise as it was the day you bought it, and no stuttering!
Even a cheap one you can pick up for less than a tenner will blow away your ball mouse no messing!SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -
So with an optical mouse does one still need to use a mouse pad? silly question i know but someone once told me you don't need to and i rather like mine.0

I dont use a mouse pad either here on my home computer, or the one I use at work. An optical mouse works on practically any surface (within reason - best not to try it on the skin of a rice pud), including your trouser leg or the hair on your head!
The only surfaces it will have problems with are shiny surfaces as these scatter the signal and confuse it.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -

I still use a mouse mat, simply because of the smooth surface (in my case it's an Icemat so it's made of glass, very smooth in conjunction with teflon feet)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

We meet again superscaper! I must say i prefer a mouse pad - i guess psychologically it protects the mouse.0

I prefer using a mat too - most desks have some kind of texture on them, even if they're not made of real wood, so a mouse mat just makes things easier.
Don't forget that even an optical mouse can pick up dirt, especially if it's got those little 'feet' underneath it, so it's still worth turning it upside-down every now and again and removing it.0 -
I must be tired. When i first read the title of this post i thought the OP had mis-spelled House as in "Oh my god my house is filthy!!". Then i hovvered over the post and saw "I idly took the little round plastic thingy off the bottom of the mouse and out came the little ball and a whole lot of muck too...eeek!!"
And then i thought she had a real live mouse in a wheel that when she took it out of the wheel the underside of the mouse was covered in muck. I was thinking "My God! How long has she kept the poor thing in there for?"
And then i realised i should pay attention more.0 -
