Oh my god my mouse is filthy!!

Whilst waiting for what seemed like ages for a download to complete I idly took the little round plastic thingy off the bottom of the mouse and out came the little ball and a whole lot of muck too...eeek!!
I have now cleaned it but on the little wheels inside where the ball goes is some hard dirt which won't come off - any ideas how to clean them without drowning the mouse :D

Try scraping it off with the back of a knife (i.e. not the sharp bit). Use a bit of cleaning fluid to loosen it up, or a dab of white spirit.

Alternatively, get an optical mouse! ;)

I wholeheartedly agree, even the cheapest optical mouse I think would be far superior to a very expensive ball mouse. Trying ball mice after I've been using optical mice for years feels like going back to the stone age.

    Thanks!
I've just disassembled the mouse and given it a good springclean, obviously looong overdue!

We've bought a whole load (a nest?!) of Microsoft Optical Wheel-Mice for work at about £6.50 each, and they work fine. I've never seen the use for mice which are completely covered with buttons...

I have to say that I've found the use of extra buttons more efficient but that's just me and I have logitech G7 which is probably overkill for most people anyway. I also prefer logitech purely out of bias from bad experiences with MS mice, so really it's best to just try out different mice (if possible) as everyone will have their own preferences. I know some people can't abide wireless mice but for me I can't do without a wireless mouse. Each to their own.

I'll second cheap Microsoft optical wheel mice. I've got 3/4 around the house. They're all fantastic.
