Bio-Oil for scars...any good?

My friend's daughter has just had major surgery on her back and she has been left with a huge scar running down the length of her spine. She is a young teenager and although the scar is the least of her worries at the moment, I know she is quite concerned about it.

I wanted to get her a small "get-well" gift and I've heard that Bio-Oil is supposed to be good for helping to heal/fade scars. Has anyone used Bio-Oil on a scar and had good results with it?

All opinions welcome, especially if you have any other tips/products that have worked.

Thanks!

I used rescue oil which is just a cheap version of bio-oil. You can get it in poundland and bodycare. I found that it really did help to tone down the redness of the initial scarring and i definitely feel that my scars are less noticeable.
  • I used bio oil after an op and I think it really works. It's quite expensive, but it lasts for ages. I used it every day for a fair while and there's still some of the original bottle left.

The hospital I had my op in now recommends it to patients and they've seen people have good success with it.

I use it at night for uneven skin tone on my face, it seems to be helping although I won't really know until the summer. One thing I have to say is that it makes my skin absolutely wonderful, really soft and smooth, so even if she doesn't end up using it on her scar she can use it on her face. Very MSE!

Oh, I've had a small bottle since Septemer, use it all over my face every night and still have half a bottle left, it goes a loooong way.

The only thing I would wonder is whether by you giving her Bio Oil she may feel worse about her scar than she already does? I know the thought is good but it may not have the desired effect on her?

vitamin E oil is also very good on scars - but is a lovely facial oil and thats what its primarily sold for - so you could disguise your pressie as a pampering treat then mention casually that it is also good for reducing scarring.

Hiya my son has just had his eighth surgery on his spine and tbh I know it doesn't look like it will ever fade it really does tell her, honest :D
He had his ops at RNOH Stanmore and the surgeons stitching is something else lol wish I could sew like that!

Was it scoliosis (curvature) she had? I know most of the girls we met in hospital were dying to get to the shops to buy new clothes with their mums so maybe a nice top for her to look forward to wearing or a clothes voucher would be another idea.

Hope she has a speedy recovery, you'll be surprised how they bounce back feel free to pm if you need to ask anything
    best wishes

  • With Vitamin E the main thing is to start using it asap, so it's helping the skin heal as the scar is forming. Great stuff though- a kid I knew at college had a bad break in his arm with a thick red raised scar down both sides. Can barely see it now...

I work in NHS and we recommend Bio-oil ( for no monetary gain!), we also say that E45 and Vitamin E cream is as good. Gentle masssage whilst applying helps to stop scar tissue forming - which can be hard.

Is the girl caucasion or aftro-carribean? As this has bearings on the scar formation.
