heating costs

Hello Can anyone tell me is gas heating cheaper than oil heating, i currently pay £60 per month for gas but am considering moving to a property that is oil heating, its very difficult to find out how much i would use, there is just the two of us and it would be a 2 or 3 bedroom house. we viewed a 3 bedroom house with an oil tank in the garden which holds 1.250 litres its all very confusing.

Oil is much more expensive than mains gas.

Gas costs around 3p/kWh and oil( at 55p/litre) approx 5.5p/kWh.

How much extra it will cost you to run a house with oil CH depends on the efficiency of your present gas boiler and the oil boiler. Boiler efficiencies can vary between 60% for an old boiler(of either type) and 90% for a modern boiler.

Last November, we moved from a 2 bed terrace with mains gas to a 3 bed semi detached with oil central heating.
Our gas bills for the two of us were £21 per month. The oil bills are at least £70 per month and rising.

We were shocked by how much more expensive oil is!

Cardew has stated the running costs per kWh so it appears that gas is cheaper. However, I may be alone here in stating this but I do not find oil heating too expensive, granted the price has risen considerably(initially paying about 9p litre 17 years ago). I have a 1225 litre tank which will generally last approx 10/11 months(3 bed house) I watch the prices closely and order when I believe the price is reasonably low. I 'topped up' August 10 (700 litres at £277.47) I still have half a tank of oil. It works for me :)
