new htc phone or new sim deal with old phone

Hi there i have had my htc hero now for over a year,contract is finsihed but i am still paying for the contract as not canceled yet.

I am moving overseas in say 12 months time and ideally a 12 month contract would be nice with a nice new phone but 12 month contract are not out there anymore which is a shame.

I have been thinking of an htc desire hd as a new phone but 18 months is the contract,to be hones hope to be away by then.

My options are to buy this phone and use as a payg or try t mobile who i am with and see what they can offer me a 12 month contract with this phone. or even the new HTC Incredible S which just come out.

My other option is to call them and cancel my contract which i should have months ago and keep my phone and save myself some money as i really dont use the txt and calls allowance they offer each month and think a payg sim might be better for me,i do like to go online often with it.

I see there are deals out there on sim only like giffgaff,who offer you calls and txt and internet for say £10 a month and i suppose there are other that offer this,i am thinking this might be a better option for me,what are my options of the sims and who offers the best deal and what you get for your money when it comes to sims deals only.

Also as i am with t mobile and i have a htc hero,is there a way,a code or something you can put in your phone that checks to see if its locked?
If its locked then what would the cost of unlocking it be?

If i got a t mobile some deal then i would not have to unlock it its locked,but i dont think they offer as good as sim deals as others?

I also would like to move my number to whoever i end up with if payg,these sim deals etc so in what order would i do this request my pac code first,followed by end contract or what,i take there is a 30 day notice when you cancel your contract?

Tesco mobile do a htc wildfire on 12 months for £20 a month and £50 for the handset.

Unlocking a hero can be obtained for £12.50 - I did it yesterday, so know it works.

Then you could say have a sim only for £10 a month.
