I have been to Pontins Southport several times, and yes it can be dire!
A good tip is to book for 5 people - you then usually get an upstairs appartment. The downstairs ones are absolutely filthy due to mud being walked in from the quadrangle.
We always take sleeping bags because then at least you don't have to risk Pontins bed linen.
NEVER walk around barefooted in your appartment, there could be anything lurking in the carpets - and the carpets are so sticky it would never escape.

We once stayed in an appartment there that had a hole right through the front door - looked very much like a fist had caused it.

If you use the appartment just as a base and then spend the day in Southport, Liverpool, or even Blackpool then you can have a good time; but do not go there on the false assumption that it will be any sort of luxury because there won't.

By the way, the PGL reps are very good, and the zipwire, quad bikes, leap of faith etc. are well liked by the kids and very well run. (A bit expensive though!)

All in all, I'd go back again.

We stopped going to pontins 14 yrs ago after I found a pubic hair on the toilet seat as we entered the chalet. I have had other sun hols to primrose valley, haggerston castle, whitley bay and the vans have been clean and to a decent standard. Save up a bit more and do one of these hols instead would be my two -penorth!
