If you get car allowance then the HMRC rate for mileage drops to about 12-15p per mile (not sure of exact figure).
Are you sure, it drops for company cars?
but that is just a guide to what the cuurent fuel costs are

For privately owned vehicle I don't see any reference to allowances(they get taxed as income)

You have a few options here really, put up and shut up cos your job is of high value to you.
Tell your boss you simpley dont want to use your own vehicle anymore, he carnt force you to. (Most likely end up with no job though)
Explain you your boss about the risk he is running in terms of duty of care and the corprate manslaughter act, making you run your old v reg car for business use is very risky for him. Unless he has proceedures in place where lisence checks, insurance, MOT ect are checked and an accident happens he could well actually goto prison!!!
There are lots of stuff that he needs to make sure before allowing an employees to use their vehicle for business use.

Our lot get £150 pcm plus 25p per mile but they do need to do 10,000 business miles per year to stay on the right side of the tax man.Again i really appreciate all your replies - just to clarify I work in for an Estate Agent, I have done some digging around and two local competitors pay £150 per month car allowance on top of the salary plus the mileage. It has actually made me feel quite ill today but on the other hand I intend to address the situation in the next day or two.
I don't want to threaten to leave as you will understand the property market isn't fantastic and I do love my job but its getting to the point when bitterness will overtake loyalty.
If I drive on work business I get the flat 40p per mile plus 5p per passenger per mile.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0 -

No it doesn't. The employee can still claim the forty/twenty-five pence per mile. If they claim that allowance, they have to be taxed on any fuel expenses paid. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Although none of that is incorrect, it is quite extreme. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Actually, if they do ten thousand miles, they will have to pay tax on the three hundred pounds excess. The tax free allowance is four thousand pounds. One thousand eight hundred pounds, plus two thousand five hundred pounds, leaves a balance of three hundred pounds, over the four thousand pounds limit (for ten thousand miles.) Even if they do fifteen thousand miles a year, they will still be three hundred pounds over. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Thanks - I sometimes need to carry passengers so will bear in mind the extra that could be claimed.0 -
They are trying it on, but if you've worked there less than 12 months, you might want to wait a couple of months before rocking the boat.!!

I have a meeting on Wednesday so will be armed with all you advice and info.
In addition to this when I commenced my employement in April I had a PAYG mobile phone, they advised me to get a contract and they would contribute - I did as they asked in August and have not received a penny towards to account - granted I benefit from the better tarriff, unlimited texts/calls/facebook etc but was actually OK where I was with my PAYG.
Fingers x'd and will let you know how I get on - thanks again
