That means you are paying £1 for every 5 miles or to put it another way about 27.5mpg so if you are going to continue driving a lot you may want something more economical. For 5500 your boss should have paid you £2200 or you can claim that from HMRC.I have kept a copy of every fuel receipt since April last year (10 mnths)-I've put in £1110 and mileage is 5500.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Tell your employer they are taking the biscuit. Is there anyone else in the same boat?0

Ask your boss if he would like you to pay him anymore to allow you to work for him.
I would just tell him that the car is no longer available for work purposes.0 -
As many have said, your boss is taking the !!!!. Doubtless you value your job, so unless you can threaten to leave and mean it, just explain to your boss that it is costing you too much and HMRC allow for business mileage to be reimbursed tax free at set rates which are supposed to cover more than fuel costs. HMRC are not renowned for their generosity, so that has to be the absolute minimum acceptable. Standard payroll systems can cope with that, it shouldn't be up to you to do all the form filling.

It is his own car, not a company car. The mileage rates are 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles then 25p per mile after.0 -
I have a funny feeling the OP works for a private care company who will not give a flying one if you tell them your car is no longer available for business.
(I'm probably wrong, but I've witnessed this with such companies)0 -
Keep a detailed business mileage diary each day just in case the Revenue ask for documentation and fill in form P87.

Again i really appreciate all your replies - just to clarify I work in for an Estate Agent, I have done some digging around and two local competitors pay £150 per month car allowance on top of the salary plus the mileage. It has actually made me feel quite ill today but on the other hand I intend to address the situation in the next day or two.
I don't want to threaten to leave as you will understand the property market isn't fantastic and I do love my job but its getting to the point when bitterness will overtake loyalty.0 -
If you get car allowance then the HMRC rate for mileage drops to about 12-15p per mile (not sure of exact figure).Again i really appreciate all your replies - just to clarify I work in for an Estate Agent, I have done some digging around and two local competitors pay £150 per month car allowance on top of the salary plus the mileage.
