Saw a lovely pair of pyjamas my daughter would really love at woolworths.co.uk. Can I buy them? Can I hell. This is what I get when I try to register:
Sorry, but we have been unable to approve your application for a Woolworths account.
As part of this application, a search at the Credit Reference Agency was conducted
EXCUSE ME?? There is absolutely nothing wrong with my credit. I've never missed a payment on anything. I have no CCJs, good credit history and I work for a Bank. I've never even had so much as a parking ticket.
Considering this was a £26 purchase which I was planning to pay upfront by Paypal, what's the deal here? Why can't I buy them?? What can I do??
PS There's a discount code XV437 to get 10% off as a new customer. Guess I won't be able to use that, either, as it expires on 27th Feb!!!

Bizarre!
Is my understanding correct in that they ran a credit check without your authorisation when you simply wished to pay for goods up front using PayPal?
I'd get in touch with them to bring this to their attention!"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -
I have a problem with some sites especially insurance as according to them my address does not exist!!
Even the DVLA website does not have our address listed despite us all having driving licenses and cars.
Woolies must be losing a lot of custom if they are turning customers away like this.0 -
OP...Suggest you try escalating and/or complaining to Mark Newton-Jones, Shop Direct (Empire Stores, Great Universal, Kays, Littlewoods, Very, Marshall Ward, Woolworths) Chief Executive, via sending him an email at mark.newton-jones@shopdirect.com.
With luck you may get a result !0 -

Hi Fallen121,
We would really like to look into this for you. Would it be possible for you to forward the email you received to help@woolworths.co.uk
As you may already know Woolworths does not have a credit facility, and is seen as a 'Cash Only' account. Customer can only pay via their Debit/Credit cards Or Paypal account.
We sincerely apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Many Thanks
Lisa

Well, that doesn't make much sense. So did Woolworths run a credit check or not?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I look forward to the day I go to buy a newspaper with cash up front (as the O.P wanted to do with their purchase), and the newsagent runs credit checks to prevent fraud and money laundering.
Seriously I wouldn't waste any more time with Woolworths. They obviously want you to jump through hoops to spend money with them. There are planty of other shops that exercise common sense.0 -

Yes I agree.
I remember when they first launched and invited people to pre- register with them(they had some sort of offer on if you did). They without explanation would not accept my registration. So I have never bothered with them since.0 -

..but you cannot pay with cash on the website - they are taking these steps to protect both themselves and other consumers from debit and credit card fraud.0
