The most sensible reply of the lot.
You can get a brand new one for under £200.
No one will come and repair it for under £100 no matter what`s wrong with it.
At 15 years old it`s had it`s day.

    Here you are: £169-99

Not correct. I had the brushes changed on my 12 year old Bosch last year and it cost me £64. Fixed price repair was £49, brushes £15. Now as good as new.

The fast spin on my washing machine has disappeared. It still washes fine and the drum rotates fine, but it just doesn't step up the gear to give the final fast spin to get the water out of the clothes at the end.

Any idea what the problem could be and whether it's worth getting someone in to fix the machine? It's a 15 year old Indesit bottom of the range machine and this is the first problem I've ever had with it. Would parts still be available? If I replaced it, I'd replace it with a basic bottom-of-the-range model, so would have to be a pretty cheap fix to be worthwhile!

If you can find the filter and take it off (using something to capture all the water), then replace the filter once it is empty you will find it may spin your clothes dry. I often have this problem with hair grips etc blocking the filter so i always try this before anything else.

The OP doesn`t know what`s wrong with the machine so what it cost you for yours is neither here nor there.

He has to call someone out and get ripped off.

Th OP has suggested that he or she might be willing to try to fix it. however it doesn't follow that they are fodder for rip off merchants.

If it is the brushes it will be one of the easiest things (and cheapest) to DIY.

All they will probably need is a philips screwdriver and a little common sense. It will be obvious if the brushes have worn down and will take 30 minutes.

The engineer manual will probably be available on the web somewhere for free, it will show them how to remove the panels etc.

I still suggest that the OP goes here

They have helped me to fix numerous items from my washing machine through to my combi boiler

My miele was a pain to take apart- the worst part being the hidden screws behind the dial cover but other members posted clear directions.

If the OP wants to buy a new unit then that is up to them, personally I would be willing to gamble 30 mins of my life to find out either way.

additionally, if they DIY it they don't need to dispose of the old one....

I was simply pointing out that it needn't cost £100-and not every white goods engineer is a rip off merchant.

Just has the brushes replaced on my 10+ year old Bosch cost £75 in all, I am based in South East London. In my case the machine would not wash nor spin. Can't afford a new machine at the moment and this machine has served me well over the years, I wash nearly every day. It cost me £25 in the laundrette at the weekend so times that over a three week period the repair has paid for itself.
