If you're old enough to be my father, you're probably too old to be riding a bike at all tbh. ;)

Agreed, but at least I can't be done for drunk diriving after a few pints on the way home ;)

OK, enough of the holier than thou, can all vigilante citizens, tut tutters and do gooders please just ignore the cycling threads and concentrate on OP

    Thanks

You can be done for it, you know. Drunk while riding a bike (on the road) is still drunk in charge of a vehicle!

But I agree, this is veering wildly off topic. Back to food budgeting, eh?

Bread and butter pudding's brilliant too. Bread, buttered.... cut up, layer in an ovenproof dish, with some sultanas (or currants), mix an egg with some milk. Pour it over. Sprinkle sugar on top. Bake.

And there are loads of variations to it, from as simple as putting jam or marmalade on the bread, all the way through to savoury versions with veggies and meat (never actually tried one of these) and cheese, cheese/bacon ones.

I love bread and butter pudding but never made one as they're huge really :) and I've not had a freezer.... but it's on my list for "one day".
  • Thanks again for even more replies - personally, as mentioned before, I do not eat white potatoes/rice/pasta/bread flour but I am sure a lot of oother people look in here.

Got some lovely PMs too, some even with menu planners/receipes.. thanks for that :)

Going to make myself my own meal planner and start from tomorrow, woke up very late today and did not manage much apart from a 2 hour dog walk through the mud in the woods....and then went back to bed :(

I had a look at my cupboards, it seems that I the food I have should last me at least a month (meat and tinns), got some brown cous cous too, brown pasta and brown rice. Will be improvisig with what I have already got.

    Happy New Year Everyone

Hi there, does anyone have any ideas on recipes/ meal planning for one on a tight budget??

I work F/T and am looking for a second P/T job too so anything i make has to be quite quick/easy and i'm struggling financially so its got to be as cheap as poss too!

To make things even more difficult i have IBS and intolerances which means i cant eat certain foods like pasta, bread and jacket potatoes... all the cheap, filling things! :(

I do make chicken and mushroom risotto, it only takes 10 mins to cook and lasts a few days as i'm only cooking for myself... and i eat meat, eggs, some fish, veg/salad and berries

I dont have time to cook many things from scratch and dont have enough money to buy lots of different ingredients...

Would be very much appreciated if anyone had any ideas/recipes etc?? Sorry to present such a challenge!!! x

Cook once from scratch for many meals

Gluten free pasta may be a good alternative & could be used with pre made pasta sauces/ together

Casseroles are good in this weather again freeze portions, plenty of veg to keep budget down. As a twist mixed bean casserole with tomatoes, onions various beans, chorizo/bacon pieces to add protein and spice/season to taste to serve with rice , in wraps, anything really

Once the weather improves salads again, poss GF pasta in them with peppers, corn, onion, cucumber, carrot etc and chicken/prawns/ham/eggs/cheese etc
Slow cookers are a good idea as it can cook while you are busy
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi

I used to make mince stew, which could all be made in one pot, and do you for a few days.

    |It's worth getting reasonable quality mince, as it goes a long way, then add loads of root vegetables, celery, potatoes - really tasty.
Not sure if you can eat dumplings - but they are great with this.

A slow cooker would be great as you can use cheaper cuts of meat, and veg or curry mix and your meal would be ready when you got home.

Hope you manage to find some useful ideas
