Fabulous soup/stew/whatever you want it to be. clear up as you go...no real cooking required...cheap tasty nourishing etc.....I love it and make it regularly
2 tins tomatoes (lidl 15p per tin)
2 tins kidney beans (lidl 15 p per tin) or any other beans you like
tomato puree to thicken and taste
    chilli powder to taste
chopped onion and any other left over veg plus some water half pint or so
better with a couple of red peppers but not essential (buy the wrinkled ones from greengrocer should only be pennies)
Chuck the whole lot in a big pan and simmer for 2 hours or so for the flavours to infuse add salt and pepper to taste. You can leave this chunky or bltz it with a blender
This makes a large pot enough for 3 or 4 days. Half the quantities for a smaller amount
throw tins away wipe worktop....done! I really am a lazy cook but I have had people beg for this recipe and since it is almost all from tins I do not give it to them but remain enigmatic and pretend it was hard work.
hope you try it and enjoy

pendine I just made this and its delicious and I have enough for about 4 meals!! would also turn into a nice chili or curry very easily..many thanks..
  • Nice thread.... useful for the modern single bod. I've just rented out a room to a mate (living with someone again, even a friend, is quite terrifying), but so much good info it deserves a bump...
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

Are you celebrating to the fact you are no longer single? :D

Well I may bump into you in either NYC or LA then as thats when I will be there too, back home in November from the looks of it - already planning my escape route out (dublin at new year, thailand next sep).

Have a fab holiday, sounds great. xx

P.S where are you going in Oz? I just spent a year there, loved it & want to live back there one day (though seems so hard getting in!). May have to marry an aussie as planned! ;)

I regularly go along to my local car boot sale of a Sunday where there is a fruit and veg stall. I always make sure I go towards the end. I ask the stall holder if there are any left overs from the day - the odd parsnip, a couple of carrots, a small swede etc. It means I often get a whole box of food that's ideal for the single person, and I get it cheaper, as it's the stuff that's too small in quantity or size for a family or couple, so it's not going to sell, unless I take it away, so they're eager to get rid of it.
  • Just read this thread from cover2cover as it were, not sleepy and using cheap elec lol. I'm single & child-less too. & as been mentioned before, I'm probably a loner type too. I loved Stephen's idea of narrow gauge railway lines for a holiday. Motivation is a big one for me, our society is sooo focused on families or couples so trying to buy food for 1, cook for 1, gets me down at times. Some great recipes to try & am seriously considering a slow cooker, I love making home-made soup and I like stews. I know in the states they have pot dinner parties where each person brings a food dish they have cooked. Be nice to do something sociable here like that for us singles.
We're not all witches/weirdos or molesters being single lol.
Thanks Op & (((everyone))). I feel like I belong somewhere. Tc x.

    Single and 25 here!

Actually, I rather like living alone. I've discovered I actually cook more because no-one will complain if I make a huge mess cooking one day and clean up the day after.

My main money-saver is to ignore that I live alone and do a Sunday roast. What's left of the meat then goes into sandwiches and pies and other meals like curry (which I freeze) which mean I have a steady supply of 'ready meals' on those nights when I'm too tired to cook.
