Single Money Saver living on my own

  • Hello there
I must admit I've been lurking on this board for a while and have finally found the guts to post!
I'm a single moneysaver living on my own (I do have a boyfriend but we don't live together). I really do struggle to get it all done - I mean cooking, cleaning, just being organised and frugal really!!
How do you manage, as I work full time, have a self employed business in my spare time and lots of activities/hobbies as well?
I enjoy cooking and I love having a clean and tidy house (it does happen occasionally) but regularly don't have the time or motivation to do either and end up wasting money on a ready meal that's horrible or get down because my surroundings are a mess!!

  • New person for the club here :) I've started to struggle now I'm pregnant, as the thought of cooking ANYTHING turns my stomach. Unless it looks the same going in the oven as coming out of the oven, I can't go near it. Which is disgraceful, as I'm eating an awful lot of crap!!

    Welcome to the board.

Well lots of tips on here, takes a time to read thru all though.

I suppose the most important things must be:

For food, plan in advance what you are going to eat, make a list and buy accordingly. Also if you have a freezer make a batch of one dish, but if you don't make at least two helpings one for today, one for tomorrow.

Housework, make sure if nothing else, the place is tidy. Once it is tidy it looks clean, put stuff away either as you go or before bed. Secondly, clean the floors makes everywhere look clean even if it isn't especially.

    With regard to holidaying alone.

If you don't mind camping why not buy a cheap tent (lots on ebay along with basic equipment) then join The Camping and Caravanning Club.

They have lots of sites all over Britain. Campers on the whole are very friendly and welcome someone new to talk to.

If you can keep it lightweight you could travel by coach or train, or bike if you are very hardy.

Well I've done it - bought a tent yesterday! If the weather stays dry I'm going to practice putting it up in the garden tomorrow (today), it's quite big and the garden's quite small so I've got to move all the pots out first . Thing is, I'll have to politely decline the help of my neighbour who, since I reached 60, thinks I'm incapable of doing anything and will hop over the fence to do it for me...bless. Just as well I didn't tell him I boarded the loft a couple of weeks back:rotfl:

    Well done you!

60 is a great age, just reached it myself. Still as my friend said 60 is the new 50.

By the way you mentioned your little dog. All Camping and Caravanning Club sites take dogs you just have to keep them on a lead.

If you don't mind sluming it a bit. The club have District Association camping which means you go away generally just for the weekend for about a tenner, children are usually free. What you will not get though is showers and toilets. You obviously have to have your own toilet.

If you join you will be sent a monthly mag with all the events going on.

Hope you enjoy it, we've loved camping for years.

Hi, i'll join! I'm a student, live in a little flat/halls, four of us share a kitchen. I have a few questions:

If I make soup, is there anyway I can make it smooth without blending it, as I do not have one. Perhaps putting it through a sieve?
Also I have a steamer that goes on the top of the cooker, I use the bottom of this to boil pasta, is that sort of pan ok to make soups or do you need a heavy one?

    Thanks!

Pushing it through a sieve with the back of a spoon should be OK, as should using the steamer base.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

To make soup smoother, mash it all up in the pot. The more you mash, the smoother it gets. Soup's a great MSE dish. Heinz soups are 72p in my local co-op so HM soup is in my freezer most days. I only buy Heinz soup for my cupboard if it's on a really low offer.

The new council tax bands will be out soon and singles have to pay 75% of the total. I think it should be 50%. Just another item that singles lose out on.

TELLLLLLLLLL ME ABOUT IT! I was only thinking the other day that I'd save at least £70 per month on bills if I was sharing them with someone....
