    You press the menu button.

That's sort of like someone getting a car (horseless carriage in the early days) and asking whether they whip it on the rump or the neck to encourage it to move...... the user manual doesn't state you don't need a whip, but it's so obvious......

oh I totally agree, really I do! but having used to install TV-video equipment as a living for many years I can promise that what most people assume common sense, other people have no clue.

I'm recall spending some time trying to help a person on the phone who couldn't get their VHS tape to play correctly so asking what their TV was displaying and they said nothing, we said make sure it's on the VCR channel 0 and they confirmed they'd done this and some time later we asked the obvious questio 'you have turned the TV on?' which of course they hadn't done, not realising the TV needed to be on to view a video.

Never assume anything, as they say, they'll make an a5s out of u and me

You have a DVD recorder/player without a Menu button?

What make and model? How do you access the Menu of a commercial DVD?

We had one guy we were talking to, something about a presentation, and we asked him if he had Powerpoint on his computer, a couple of seconds passed and he said no, it was plugged into one but did not have one on it!!

We have sky. Well, we had sky. It was upgraded to sky+HD. We also have a wii and a PS3. The whole shebang is connected to an intellipanel so when you turn the tv off everything turns off.
Turning the blasted thing on is often beyond me. Push this and that and do this, then press this button 3 times yada yada. I have to get my 7 year old son to turn it on for me. As for watching films streamed from lovefilm- GAH!

Panasonic DMR-EX75EB (This the highr HRD capacity http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DMR-EX83EB-K-250GB-Recorder-Freeview/dp/B0038VZXNW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1298979153&sr=8-2

You access the DVD menu when you insert the disc. It comes up with options to play the movie, go to chapters, Extra's etc. It's all programmed into the DVD disc, why does the player need to do it?

If you interrupt the playback of the movie and want to go to the Special Features, for instance, you would want to go to the menu, surely?

In your case, pressing Direct Navigator on the remote will, I think, take you to a commercial DVD's main menu.
