This is exactly what I was going to write! I couldn't agree more

To those of you who stayed a night at the Canyon - where did you stay please? Going in December (brrrrr!) and would like to stay one night at the CG.
TIA0 -
We stayed overnight and I agree with those who mention the virtues of being there for sunrise and sunset.
BUT...we were there for 8 nights, we had been to Vegas 10+ times before and had brought my in-laws for their first trip to Vegas, etc...and the GC was an important part of the trip for them. Also, it took us way longer than 4-5 hours, though we did stop for breakfast, petrol, potty stops, scenic views, etc. en-route.
Personally, for a 5-night trip, I wouldn't drive and stay overnight...we thought the GC was great and all that, and it would clearly depend on the person, but by 9am the next morning we were all ready to get back on the road to Vegas (with a stop at Hoover Dam along the way)...and that drive back seemed to take forever.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
we stayed at Thunderbird Lodge...staying there was more expensive than staying at one of the motels just outside the park, but having a view of the canyon out our window, and being able to just wander out of the lodge and BE RIGHT AT THE RIM was worth it to us. The accomodation was more basic than our room in Vegas - though oddly the bathroom was really nice.
The food at the restaurants in the park is awful though...just awful.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
For 5 nights unless your really into the natural side of things I'd just do a day trip. You can do it via car or tour in a day trip although its a long drive so I'd probably prefer a guided tour rather then a DIY trip. While DIY has its advantages taking 6 hours of your holiday to drive somewhere is likely to leave you tired anyway, especially if your coming and going in 5 days time!0

Just another point to the OP
Are you going from the Uk straight to Vegas and back again? If you are you will be very jetlagged the first day so that then only leaves you 4 days. To take 2 days out to do the GC doesnt make to much sense.
I would still recomend an overnight at the GC and then a side trip down to Sedona and flagstaff for the meteor crater http://www.meteorcrater.com/ BUT on your next trip:D0 -

We stayed at the Grand Hotel, just outside the NP, in Tusayan

Have also stayed outside park in tusayan (only a mile from park entrance) in best western but was 13 years ago.
Will be great in Dec very cold, icy/snowy0 -

Me too Jackie.
I guess it all depends on how critical the Vegas part of your trip is. I don't really gamble and after I've put $5 in a slot machine I've seen everything I need to of casinos and go shopping/to see a show. Booking these in advance I'd still have plenty of time to do a trip with a stayover, but it depends on what you want to get out of the rest of it. If Vegas is the big draw, then maybe a flight would be the best way. As others have said, if you do drive, try and get to Sedona, Monument Valley, the Hoover Dam and Lake Powell or some of the other local sights too.
Whatever you do, force yourself to stay up until as close as you can to 10pm on the night you get there, it will help the jetlag no end. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? 5 nights in Vegas is the final part of our road trip. The plan is:-
San Francisco 4 nights
Pick up ford mustang convertible (hopefully)
Drive to monterey 2 nights
Drive to yosemite 3 nights
Drive to lone pine 1 night
Drive to Vegas 5 nights0
