Grand Canyon day trip or spend the night

We have 5 nights in Vegas coming up and can't make my mind up over:-
Plane trip to Grand Canyon south rim from Vegas (have heard that the flight can be horrendus due to thermals from the Canyon)
or
Drive 4/5 hours and stay in a lodge at the south rim.
Not really interested in the west rim as I'm told it is no way near as awsome and isn't even in the grand canyon np.
So to all those that have been to the south rim, what shall I do?

End of the day its your call.
Everyone will give you diff answers but FWIW i have driven there and stayed overnight...seeing sunset and sunrise over tha Canyon which is great.
BUT you only have 5 days in Vegas I always go for 10 days minimum...I wouldnt want to give up any time in Vegas when you are only there for such a short time in first place0 -
with only 5 days in vegas i personally would not stay overnight.
when i went i did the helicopter trip at sunset where you land in canyon have a drink and snack then fly back over strip when dark.0 -
I did the Champagne Breakfast in the Canyon helicopter trip, early start but spectacular they fly you down into the canyon which is awesome especially the bit where they drop over the rim.., then breakfast and a flight along a little ways and then fly back down the strip before landing... nothing like seeing things from the air it was spectacular and the flight was fine.#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

We did the plane trip to the south rim and it wasn't too bad. You do feel very vulnerable up there and the smell of aviation fuel isn't very pleasant but you are only in the air for an hour so it is soon over.
I agree that an overnight stay is a long time out of your short trip and the plane trip is an early start so you are back at your hotel by teatime.0 -
Only worth staying if you're going to the bottom IMO.0

WE left LV in a Boeing 767 and were in turbulence for probably 15 minutes what it would be like in a small plane I hate to think.I personally would try and do over night as the sun set at Hope point was a highlight of my holiday. We stayed in a lodge only a few minutes from the south rim. If you do it take a tourch as it gets dak very quickly after sunset and there are not any lights out there0

We stayed overnight in a lodge - got the last room in the whole of Grand Canyon!
We took a Cessna ride over the Canyon - it was fantastic, but no good if you get travel sick. It's funny, I hate roller coasters, but I loved that and apparently it was just as bad! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
We stayed the night and it is so peaceful once all the day tripper have gone. Few stay for the sunset and hardly anyone is there for sunrise. the different colours of the sun change the look of the canyon0

I would definitely stay over, its a lovely drive and you could also do the Hoover dam on your trip. The sunsets and sunrises are spectaculair and you could also do a stargazing trip (usually free) and out of this world literally. If your up for the sunrise you could be back in vegas mid-morning.
My mind tends to wander............If found please return;)
