    They can.

They know two things when they get the raw data:

    1. What status codes mean when referring to a Bank Account
    2. The fact that the type of account the "1" is recorded against, is a Bank Account

The distinction between a credit account in arrears, and a bank account run improperly, is that the creditor sees whether it's a bank account or another type of account, that the data refers to.

Lenders are just as concerned about your ability to pay your credit card on time as they are concerned about your ability to ensure you've got enough in the bank to cover instructions set up to debit said account.

Of course it will have a similarly negative effect as a credit card in arrears, because it's an equal level of poor account conduct.

I understand your viewpoint and argument but the fact remains you won't be able to convince the financial institutions concerned that they are wrong - as they aren't.

You'll just have to take it on the chin, move on, and be more careful & vigilant with your current account in future
according to Equifax, a lender will see the entire report and all text, not just the status codes (1,2,3,etc)

a direct debit payment to british gas for £30, which is returned but paid later that day, or the day after, is in no way the same as a credit card in arrears...i'm sorry, but you're talking complete bo11ocks there!

Surely if the 2 returned D/D's were due to fd banking error then they should have found in your favour on those two ? If they weren't fd error then you have had 3 D/D's returned on your fd account and you can't change that fact. It still shows that the payments weren't made on time however you look at it.

    Why was it returned?

this one was my fault, i wasn't paying close enough attention to my account. what i was trying to say is a returned direct debit is in no way as bad as credit card arrears

on the other 2 occassions it was a banking error by another bank, one that failed to pay by automatic transfer into this account, and then the other by my mortgage payment being taken twice, meaning DDs failed due to insufficient funds

neither of these were down to first direct, which is why they're taking a hard line

Hoping you can help me here as I'm trying to assemble some evidence.

If you have a first direct current account, can you respond below answering each question:

    1. Have you had a direct debit, standing order or cheque returned (declined/bounced) in the last 2 - 3 years?

    2. If 'Yes', did first direct report a late payment to the credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax or CallCredit)?

That's all I need to know...many, many thanks in advance

Nope :) never had ANY issues with FD

I can try and change it because the payments were made on time to the creditor. first directs reporting is over the top and unnecessarily punitive...this is my point

They seem a pretty decent bank tbh, better than a lot that are out there!

I agree with you, for the most part they've been good. This complaint is caught between them and Equifax, and is partly down to the limitations of how they display certain account data.

I should probably let this thread disappear now...

That is not correct. I have seen first hand that the Co-Operative Cashminder, Barclays Bank Cash Card Account, and Lloyds TSB Cash Account all appear on your credit file and these banks report the running of these accounts accordingly.

They simply report the overdraft limit as ZERO.

You really should check your facts before posting.

I'm sure anyone reading this who has one of the basic accounts I mention above will confirm this. I've had all three and can confirm it myself.

The Experian Rep made major errors in replies to two threads on 1/3/2011

My initial reaction was that the reps account had been hacked , because the replies indicated quite a lack of knowledge on CRA issues (which you wouldn't expect from a CRA rep) :o

You are correct that Basic bank accounts report the monthly status of the account to CRAs , in addition to the banks you mentioned Yorkshire / Clydesdale report their Readycash A/C

I do not hold that A/C , however I can confirm that Cumberland reports its basic bank account - First Trust do not however , nor do Halifax /BOS Easycash

The Experian rep's other erroneous post is here
Wrong - my RBS current account shows on my Experian report.

The missing account is more likely to be because the account was opened before RBS started obtaining customer consent to share data in this way, as others have suggested.

In my experience, most banks can accept your consent retrospectively. I'd give your bank a call and chase your original query.

It will certainly help your credit rating if you can get the account on there, assuming you've managed it within the terms of your agreement.

    James Jones

in this case the reply is not 100% correct as can be seen from the subsequent posters replies

I wonder whether the Rep is a "plastic knives & fork" B2C rep - similar to Nat West's moneysense advisors :p

Experian have a stall at consumer shows like the Ideal Home Show . "It takes an exhibition stand to many conferences and events like the Ideal Home Show and the BBC Good Homes Show.

    Read more:" http://www.thetimes100.co.uk/case-study--marketing-mix--83-244-5.php

Would Experian let this Rep loose with B2B customers I wonder ?

The ICO had a stall at an exhibition I visited a few years ago , they haven't been back since - I hope I didn't put them off :D
