How do I ask for someone's surname politely?

Depends on the context and whether you can reason as to why you need it. If it's a sales pitch you can ask for a business card, if they don't have one then ask for the stores phone number and ask them to write their name down so you know who you spoke to. If they only put their first name then ask what their surname is and say something like or are you the only x in the store? Most would probably either verbally tell you or they will write it down.

In most cases a first name/description would be sufficient though!

if you get the first name for example if they say im pete say ' theres not two pete's work here is there

but normally its okay with first name as some briefs sayy DO NOT ask a name you can void a report by asking

I'm on Retail Eyes and obviously they don't pay much, as most mystery jobs wouldn't right? Is there one that pays better than others maybe?

Surname is required. I feel like a stalker, this is horrible.

Chances are they wouldn't have asked you to get their surname if it wasn't going to be quite natural. As others have said - they are more likely to tell you NOT to ask for a name as it would look suspicious most times.

What job is it? Some places, such as GfK bank for example, they have their full names on their badges or nameplates anyway.

Pay varies from company to company, there are jobs that are higher paid but bear in mind that where there's a big difference (i.e. more than double) there's probably a reason - either they'll take longer, require an expensive purchase or some other factor that makes them less appealing.

Edit: Sign up to the companies on the first page and you'll see for yourself who pays more and for what.

I think they are known as paying poorly because for some jobs there is no fee at all, just reimbursement. Also, they want very detailled reports. I find other companies pay the same or slightly more but the reports are easier.

Mystery shopping won't make you rich.
