Broken gas oven - who will repair?

Hi there,

We live in rented accomodation and last night the electric tripped out. No problem we thought, we turned it back on at the box and carried on. 20 minutes later I noticed the oven was not cooking dinner and wasn't getting up to temperature.

It's a gas oven and I tried again today and the light and fan are working but no heat, and it's not drawing any gas from the boiler.

I've rang a couple of local gas engineers, including one the letting agents advised us to try, but they aren't interested in coming out.

The landlady has given us permission to get someone out to look at it, but apart from Comet Engineers at £125 a fix, I can't seem to find anyone else that is interested... any suggestions?

Yeah it's their cooker. They don't live locally, probably 200 miles away roughly, so she has said I can arrange a repair through the letting agency. The letting agency have given me 2 people to call, neither are interested.

I've now emailed the landlady and told her I can't find someone to come and look at it, and that Comet do a repair including parts etc for £125.

It's just for £125, she might decide to just get a new oven? The hob is working fine, just the oven that won't work.

  • don't no if this will help,

we had the same problem with a power cut. The damn oven would not work until we set the time correctly on it

I did hear this on a website. Only thing is our oven has an old fashioned dial clock, it's not digital.. would this still apply do you think?

The gas hob works at the top, the grill works that is inside the oven... just not getting any gas going through to it.

I think the oven fault caused the powercut somehow.

More likely to be the thermocouple in the oven. It's essentially a "flame failure" device - it cuts the gas if the flame goes out. If it goes faulty the oven will not stay lit and the gas will turn off.

Does the oven light and stay lit when you hold the control in and keep it held in?

There is nothing to light it with, you just turn it to the oven logo and then set the temperature, so I can even try and light it.

Any idea who could fix it? or is it a case of a new oven?

    Thanks for the replies!

It's a baumatic, I've got the manuals but no mention of a model and nothing on the oven itself.

    It looks like this;
