Nokia 8800 SIROCCO - GOT STOLEN TODAY!!!!!!!

Basically, my mate had this phone and I had the money from another guy who wanted to buy it. My mate was showing it to a potential buyer as he can get hold of a few of these. He showed the guy the phone and the guy somehow managed to swap the boxes around, after a minute or so my mate opened the box and it was emtpy.
Phone was gone!
The phone is blocked now and police were contacted and I know this is a obvious scam but he wasnt aware of this. I just want to help him somehow and thought if I post here, just MAYBE I could get some advise?
I got this guys mobile phone number and police have it as well, is there any chance they can track him down? I know they can with all the software but will they really do it? For them it may be nothing but for my friend to lose a phone worth £400 is just not on.
Is there anyway we can check up on this guy? His number still rings and now I have it was wondering of calling him and saying I got a phoen for sale and he should meet me.
Any and I mean ANY sort of advise would help.
Sorry if some of the above dont make sense, realy P*SSED off as I had a buyer already and had to refund him in full now!
