Variable v fixed isa

Hi...a little confused here...I have variable rate isas...i used to contact bank every year before April to make sure my isas didnt just default into low rate isa..( these may have been fixed rate isas i used to have ! )....phoned today and was told that my current ( V rate ) would just stay the same.....sorry to be dense ...what am i missing here?

Impossible for anyone to comment without letting us know exactly what account it is that you hold.
And as for fixed vs variable, it really depends on the rates.
Personally I'd say that 3% variable is preferable to 3% fixed, but if the fixed rate is higher then that may (or may not) be better.0
