I have to second the Pioneer. I have a Pioneer 108 and it's pukka!
  • I'd agree with suggestions already regarding SVP and Ebuyer - I've used them both dozens of times.

With regards best writer/brand/software, go to a dedicated website like https://www.dvdrbase.com.

    Briefly.....

It's possible to backup your own DVDs (in case they get scratched) using freeware (i.e. software that is legally provided free).

Most common are DVD Decrypter (to remove copy protection) and DVD Shrink to reduce a DVD-9 (Dual Layer) down to DVD-5 (Single Layer). This is achieved by reducing the quality or the image (slightly noticeable).

If anyone wants a guide, send me a PM.
  • A friend pointed me towards these guys at <www.overclockers.co.uk>, they do have quite a few different dvd writers, NEc, Liteon etc. Expect to pay around £5.60 shipping unless you're in the Stoke on Trent area and can pick up from their shop. Here's the details on one that I was looking at. They do have a few other little gems aswell, worth a look, especially if you can pick up.

    Sony DWU-22A 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Ivory) - OEM (CD-033-SO)
Sony's amazing new DWU 22A is the next generation Dual Layer DVD recorder for your PC that brings together all the popular formats in a single drive: DVD+R and DVD+RW, as well as CD-R and CD-RW. Includes Buffer Underrun Protection Technology and All popular DVD formats are supported-eliminate the worry in choosing a DVD recordable drive.

    - DVD+R 16x, DVD-R 8X
    - DVD+R9 2.4X, DVD+RW 4X
    - DVD-RW 4X
    - Read 16X, CD-RW 24X, Read 48X
    - Access time 160ms
    - Buffer Size : 2MB

    Price: £33.50 (£39.36 Including VAT at 17.5%)
  • Hi I have found an even cheaper dvd +/-writer £29.32 inc Vat http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5179&GroupID=42
  • I can't stress enough the need to do research before you buy (if you really want to save money).

I bought a Sony drive which was actually a re-badged LiteOn which when I updated the firmware converted it from a SL to DL writer at no cost and increased the speed to 16x. Saved about £25 by not buying the 'official' drive'

For most basic users this is probably too much to comprehend (sorry if I sound patronising) but it can be done.

Anyone want more details, PM me or google for updating DVD firmware hacks patches etc.

I knew nothing before I looked....

Steer well clear of these cowboys

Stick to reputable companies like https://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk
  • My Sony drive was a sony dw-u18a, updating the firware made it a Liteon 812S (i think) and then updating f/w again made it an 832S.

Anyone who is interested, try http://forum.rpc1.org/

Be very careful though - get it wrong and you could end up witha dead drive.
  • thanks Charlie 12, I'll steer clear.
  • I agree. Shopped around for ages for cheapest CD/DVD media and now only order from https://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk
