Megazoid,
Capacity for Dual layer is 8.5GB I believe. Media is still at about ~ £4 or more, compared with 30p or so for 4.7GB single layer. I think most people 'backing up' their DVD's are happy to just have the film, and not bother with the extras, so DVDShrink and 4.7GB media cover their needs. Suppose it's useful to back up with, but I'm about to get a 300GB SATA drive for around £120 for that purpose. At 40p per GB, compared with 47p for a DL DVD it's cheaper and more convenient!
Having said that, I've got an LG DL DVD recorder, as it was only £50 when I bought it a few months ago!

Not sure about NEC drives. I purchased a Pioneer drive 18 months ago and it has been excellant. Looked at lots of review sites before I bought and Pioneer seem to be highly recommended for compatability and reliability.
SVP are wonderful. Good service at reasonable cost. Sometimes you just get a good feeling about dealing with a company. If any items are cheap because they are lower quality they will make this clear. Much better than the usual 'Top quality at lowest prices' claims that turn out to be a load of doo-doo. Make sure you sign up to their e-mail list at
https://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/maillist.htm
They only send out an e-mail about once a week but you do get first chance at any bargains. They do cheap delivery weekends, special package deals and all sorts of money saving offers. Best of all, it's run by people with a sense of humour. They once did free delivery until it next rained in the boss's back garden. Forecast links were included in the e-mail!
No links with the company except as a satisfied customer. However if anybody from SVP is reading this you could stick some extra discs in my current order as a thank you!Sometimes you're the statue, sometimes you're the pigeon.0 -
I think the Pioneer ones from here are mac compatable, couple of quid more though!

The NEC 3520A is the recorder that everybody is raving about at the moment - it is the upgraded version of the 3500. I believe the main difference between the two is that the 3520 supports dual layer recording on both DVD+R and DVD-R discs, although I've yet to see DVD-R DL discs on sale! I bought one in December, and have not had a bad recording on it yet. All discs (decent branded Verbatim ones) have played back on Toshiba & Cyberhome players, and in various PCs. Plus it is fast and quiet.tartandude wrote:Does anyone know if there are any dvd players at all, which are compatible with PC recorded Dual Layer DVDs?
Most domestic DVD players are compatible with PC recorded discs. For further info on the compatibility of your player visit the Video Help website. I can't give a full URL for the page you need as it is blocked by my company's server! Click on the "Players" tab, and it should give you a search window to search for your player. Bear in mind that it is an international site, so some UK players may not be listed.
This site is also the best resource I have found for any information on manipulating video on your PC - they have numerous guides on how to convert between video formats and write onto DVDs and CDs. Put it in your Favourites!0 -
