DLA was mentioned to me in a discussion regarding my fathers motability car as it happens. It was my father who said that It was possible I might have something in my genes that may have caused the problem I have.

Up until now Ive never given it a thought.

I hope you dont have to experience pain like this one day.

Surely if your father has a hereditary condition it would prompt you to look after your own health a bit more?

To qualify for DLA you need to have had care/ mobility needs for three months, and there needs to be an expectation that the needs will last for a further six months. Nine months is plenty of time for you to lose some weight.

That is a legal decision and not one for us, the doctor atos or anyone else only the DM can rule on that, also he maybe able to walk a mile but how does he walk it,is he in pain, have discomfort or fatigue.

Again only the DM can decide

Then why is the OP even asking? Might as well shut the forum down!

I hope you dont have to experience pain like this one day.

Just what meds are you on for this pain then?

How many specialists are you under and whats causeing the pain apart from you being lazy and eating all the pies?

sweet FA, Im on drugs 80x stronger than morphine for my broken back and a shed load of other conditions and I havnt been able to drag my useless legs a mile on crutches or wheel a mile since my accident, you couldnt walk a mile if the pain was anything other than an annoyance.
  • Brian The Lion, why don't you try claiming for DLA, if you think you have a good case? I personally don't think you have a cat in hell's chance if you can walk 1 mile! I was initially turned down even though I can only walk 10 yards, and then only with severe pain and breathlessness.

I was eventually awarded DLA, but only after submitting many medical reports confirming that I have severe heart failure, and that I suffer extreme breathlessness on minimal exertion! I also have osteoathritis and other problems.

    Good luck with your claim!

Recently I've realised that I may have a hip problem, which results in hip pain, knee pain and calf pain when walking, especially up and down hills. I walk my daughter to nursery, a distance of 1 mile round trip. My father has oesteoporosis and was wondering if I may have it too.

My partner also says that I walk like a penguin and sometimes I look like im rollerblading because of the shapes my body makes when I walk?!? and also that it looks like im trailing my bad leg behind me,.....

At the moment I am overweight, which is the main factor putting me off seeking medical advice from a GP or making a DLA claim. The problem I have is that I find exercise painful also, with the exception of swimming.

Do you think it is worth it for me to seek further advice or is it likely that any medical staff or decision makers will take the easy option and automatically tell me to lose weight first?

I feel like im in a catch 22 situation. I really would like to lose a couple of stone but the usual gym activity causes me a lot of discomfort in my legs.

thanks in advance for any replies

    diet and body weight exercises
    no need for a gym
IMO anyone attending with any ailment that could be aggravated by excess weight, should be told to lose weight
why waste resources when it could be self treated for free/cheaper with a dietitian?
  • mabey there are care needs if the person is so fat they cant wipe there own back side....

but this can easily be fixed by putting less in the big hole at the top than can fall out of the small hole at the bottom........

but i think dla should be for diabilities that are more serious than fat
    sorry....just my view

I have invested in a rowing machine - can be as high or low impact as I want, folds away in the corner when I don't want ... and all in the privacy of my own home! ;)

    it was funny.
years back i tore my ankle ligaments badly
so went from training 6 days a week and working in a physical job to nothing.
still ate as i had before
so piled on a bit of weight
when i went to the doc's,he made me jump on the scales and gave me a ticking off as i had put on weight
I was in my late 20's and had spent a good few years piling on muscle. he was comparing me to a weight from when i was a teenager doing loads of running
its all relative but i would have thought just by looking at me ,he would have clicked i maybe a bit heavier than my last weigh in!
  • This has to be one of the funniest threads I've read in ages.

    Being fat
Asking for benefits rather than a diagnosis
    Walking a mile
    Eating the pies
Being too fat to wipe one's own backside :rotfl:
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)
  • By the way you have stated you walk it seems like you must be quiet over weight which i think is a far assumption. If you are of that size the likely hood is your legs and hips are bending in an un natural way which in its self could cause pain.

My advice make an appiontment with your gp to disscuss what you have said in here it might simply be a weight issue which could be through lifestyle or thyroid or something more complex. Also if you have a history of arthritis in your family then weight will certainly put pressure on your joints.

Its going to be better for you in the long term to go to the doctor now, forget about DLA that defently shouldnt be your first consideration.
