ok, I desperately need a car that is to do about 50 miles of motorway driving per day. but I only have 800 to 1000 ish to spare. I was thinking of the auctions, which I know are a massive gamble.
any tips?
any models at that price that would be good for reliability - fuel efficiency?
should I go with ex fleet?
what not to touch?

You'll not get much ex-fleet for £800 to £1000, that's for sure.
What can you find for that budget on AutoTrader?0 -
with a budget that liimited id go private, then you can at least look around and test drive it. you dont sound like you've got a lot of experience with auctions. they are only a gamble when you dont know what your doing.0

I'd be looking for something that nobody wanted when it was new - Nissan Almera, several Hyundais, etc etc etc.0

Mk1 or MK2 Mondeo. They can do silly miles and are as cheap as chips to repair.0

I wouldn't go to Auction unless you really know what you're doing. With Auction fees an £800 hammer price may well cost you the best part of £1000 with the fees they charge. Better to look private and have a test drive, and as Kilty says look for unpopular cars like the Nissan Almera, Hyundai's, Kia's. Mondeo's (can get some nice ones for £1000). Have a look in Autotrader at cars up to £1000.

Just what I was thinking :T
That sort of thing though. Diesel ones especially. One of the newest/lowest mileage diesels money can buy for a grand. Old-school technology as well so noisy but robust -- unlike some of the newer ones.0
