Selling a car with questionable value?
Due to (hopefully) order my new car tomorrow, with estimated deliver of about 5 or 6 weeks.
The current car is a 2002 Hyundai Elantra with some body work issues, namely the front left wing is dented quite heavily (albeit superficially, not to the detriment of the structure of the car). It's only done 75k miles, runs fine and has 8 months of MOT left on it.
Owing to the.. questionable value of the car, what's the best way to sell it or indeed, scrap it? Not using it to part-ex, obviously.

I'm not a car trader/dealer & I'm sure many will have their opinions but here's some options to look at:-
1. Try the dealer where your new car's coming from - you never know (unless you've screwed them down well on the deal on the new one!)
2. Sell it privately via paper/Autotrader but be prepared for timewasters, tyre kickers & people wanting it for next to nothing!
3. Try Ebay but some of the above applies!
4. Try the online valuers - webuyanycar, wewantanycar etc - you won't get top dollar but you will get your money with less hassle. It's free to get a quote & will give you some idea of how much it's worth.
5. Based on the value from 4 above - call the scrappies - I've heard of surprising prices being paid recently.
With the decent mot that's left, someone will definitely take it off your hands, would give someone cheap motoring for a few months or more and many people are after just that!0 -

This is precisely the sort of car that I'd be looking for for a second vehicle -- relatively unloved but reliable model with some superficial damage.
Then drive it around as-is until I can source a colour-matched wing from a scrapper and get trusted mechanic to sort it.
I'm not alone in this. Be realistic about the price and it'll shift. Perhaps ebay would be the best place for it?
You may be surprised. Realistically the car is worth about £1000-1200 in good condition -- I'd probably be prepared to pay around £750-800 for it if it's as you say.
They're not bad old motors, Elantras -- not good looking but solid enough.0 -
I say that, but I've just looked on ebay -- and I was shocked at just how cheap these cars have become of late.
Perhaps £750 was a bit rich after all, I don't know.
Only you know what the general condition is -- they're still a decent car and in principle worth what I said.0 -

TBH something that's reliable enough with long MOT will fetch a reasonable amount IMO0

An auction might get a few quid more than scrap value.
Find one that does cheaper cars.0 -
Stick it on gumtree, you'll easy get £400/500 if it's got decent MOT.0

Or, of course, if it's just the wing that needs doing, get it done up.
A s/h wing in the correct colour, assuming you can find one quickly enough, will only cost around £30 or so (and I believe that the wings are bolt-on on these cars). Fitting is not an onerous task either (assuming it's not a welding job).
Then get it polished and valeted (£40) and you maximise its value. Don't be too caught up in the "cheap Korean"-ness of the car -- there is a section of the buying market that appreciates this model for its durability and I'd say that, with a little bit of elbow grease, £6-700 is the bare minimum you can expect for it.
It's a better buy than a 15 year old Golf and a lot of people appreciate this.0 -
I've got my car on gumtree/freeads and pistonheads at the moment with nobody wanting it!
one years mot on it and I advertised it for £500, thought it would be long gone by now......
The problem I suppose down my way the scrappies are paying £225 for any car guaranteed, so its close to scrap.
but you could run it around for the 12 months and then if it fails badly then scrap it.
now got signs in the windows of it as well......0
