  • Noticed in Sainsbury's yesterday that they are doing 2 bottles of a cheap red (or white) for £5. I can't imagine it would be all that nice to drink but I might try some for cooking at that price.

Bought some Stowells Tempranillo today for 99p per small bottle (185ml) in B&M's.
A little peppery/spicy, so may be good for cooking at this price.

Works out at under £4 per large bottle and the large bottle was £6 in ASDA today.

  • What's that then? :A;)

I know it's odd but i don't like red wine for medical reasons cant drink more than a couple of glasses at a time so I have to be careful when it comes to alcohol!

I don't trust cheap wines/cooking wines. I once messed up prawn risoto by putting really awfull sour white wine in it...

I was so angry with myself, not only prawn risoto is my favourite and signature dish, but they were good big expensive prawns and loads of parmasan cheese was wasted.. And I had to serve it to my friends!! So it actually wasn't wasted as such, but it didn't make the impression it was supposed to.

I just open a bottle (we buy screw tops anyway), use it and drink the rest. If not that night, within few days anyway.

Waitrose are awesome for giving advice on wines and to my surprise actually very reasonably priced! I went to the local store last night and the customer service was acceptional.
  • Agree that Waitrose have some surprisingly reasonable wines. Their basic entry level wines are as good, if not better, as the Tesco 'half price' wines and they are at that low price all of the time.

Definatley think that the whole notion of cheap cooking wine is a bad one. If you wouldn't drink it, you shouldn't really put it in your food as cooking it isn't going to make it any better or hide the rubbish quality. Asda mini bottles are really good for cooking. They work out at £1.25 per bottle if you buy on linksave and there's some nice wines on offer - a couple of their Extra Special reds and some nice Chilean stuff. Works out the same as the bog standard Merlot and Aussie lines in the same offer.

I checked out the Sainsburys cooking wine yesterday and it's only around 5%. I'll buy some more of the Stowells next time I'm in B&M's at only 99p per bottle. Home Bargains have similar offers at 99p - a better deal for a proper strength wine. At £1.02 per bottle, Sainsburys is 250ml compared to 185ml.

If I only need a small amoutn I use vermouth to replace white and marsala to replace red. however for a beef in wine or coq au vin or similar where the wine is a big ingredient I use a decent wine I woudl drink.
