Wood pellet heating system

Hi, I'm intending to sign up for the Renewable Heating Incentive (or rather my landlord is on my behalf). I've had a couple of firms over and am waiting for quotes for supplying and installing a pellet heating system, once the scheme takes effect. The options are an attractive stove sitting in the kitchen or a boiler fitted in the utility room. Does anyone have any experience of such heating systems? Thanks :)

Depends if you can stand the noise of them running. Most here in Italy try to put them well out of earshot.

  • Oh that's interesting and very helpful thanks! I know of one stove locally which is almost unbearably noisy, but the owners say that it can be fixed and due to the fact that the local supplier of their system has gone bust, AND the company who supplied the stove to them will not allow an engineer who is untrained in their specific machine access to the instruction manual! They have tried another company to no avail, so are stuck with the noise. When it self-cleans, it sounds like a rocket taking off. I am thinking I'm likely to opt for the boiler in the untility room to be honest. A brand which one of the installers who came to see me is using is JASPI. Do you have a pellet stove Geotherm?

Not here, heard enough of them running to put me off!!! I have a ground source heat pump for all my heating and hot water.

  • Oh dear! Anyway fingers crossed mine will behave when/if it is banished in the utility room! I hope you enjoy your GSHP, and it runs quietly and efficiently.

Just like a fridge running for over 5 years now, and no maintenance :T

  • Gosh how fabulous. Italy is quite a cosy country in parts - could this system withstand a Scottish winter? :) Seriously, I have been told it is a great system and whilst more expensive initially to install, long term it is incredibly efficient and money-saving....that is what I have heard.
  • Good morning: as you have posted on other threads about various heating and DHW options, see here for excellent advice.

    Hi Shedgirl.
The systems are used a lot in Nordic countries, where temps drop a lot lower. Many GSHP's are designed to work to external -35C, so I don't think Scotland would have any problem. We are running with wind chill temps here at -8 at the moment!!!!

Thanks Canucklehead for that link, it is interesting

Shedgirl, some info here from a company not too far from me, they don't mention noise, but there are other useful information regarding costs ect.

    Ps,

I have no affiliation with this company at all!!!!
