European car hire-excess insurance?

How does this work?

I mean,if i bought my own policy from a UK provider and then showed it to the car hire company in Europe, would it be acceptable?

Also,if i did damage their car, surely they would just stick the damage on my credit card and where would i be with the insurance then?

Would i be using my newly bought insurance policy to pay the car hire co so that they would refund my credit card or would i be using the insurance to pay the charge made on my card?

It sounds like a minefield..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

If you buy the excess cover from a separate provider, you would have to pay up in the event of an incident and then claim it back from the excess insurance. That's one reason it's cheaper than just buying it from the car hire firm.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

I can see that you could find yourself in the tricky situation of having paid up and not being able to claim.

What is the weight of evidence required to make a claim on your excess insurance?

What documentation might you have to provide?

Is it simply the case that a payment was made as a result of an uninsured loss and therefore your excess insurance co will payout?

Does anyone know what typical per day rates for excess insurance that car hire cos charge at pickup?

You have to fill in an accident report form with full details of how/where the damage occurred. Include the documentation the hire company will do when the car is returned damaged. If it all meets the T&C of the policy the insurance company will reimburse you

    Thanks all..

I found a useful FAQ here which may help others..

In the FAQ there is a reference to certain credit cards which include excess insurance. Does anyone know of any?
