They replace the dial up number with *99#, having first stored the APN of the network operators full internet access point in settings > GPRS modem settings and away they go.

thanks for the advice , it is all getting complicated now , so let me recap 3g is fastest if I cant pick that up it will be gprs. Do the sierra cards connect via 3g too? Can I but one of those and get a normal sim card (I have orange and o2) enabled for 3g obviously it will be on a tarrif. So far tonight I have used 7 mb just need to look up how many mb in a gb. :money:

    1000mb in a gb

i use vodafone and 02 for wireless data and it all depends on coverage really as others have said. if you are in a fairly remote area, chances are you'll only get gprs connection, so similar to a modem.

are you going to be dialing up form pretty much anywhere? or specific locations?

hi it will be 1 specific location which I dont think will have great coverage this will have to be my main internet connection I dont really want to use phone but have a spare 6310i if that is better than a pcmcia (i have a laptop) I am guessing put the phone near the window might get a better signal but can it do 3g? if not I will have to get a pcmcia card .

whether you get 3g or not will all depend on which operator you go with and their coverage in that area, as not all parts of the uk are covered by 3g. it's obviously better covered the nearer a bigger town or city your are, although it is getting more widespread all the time.

if you know the postcode your best bet would be to check with the operator's...
