There are always secondhand ones up for auction on eBay. Prices obviously vary but I sniped an unlocked one last year and checking back I paid £39.88 delivered. Depends on what value you put on a warranty and how quickly you want one.

  • Thanks kwikbreaks :),
I assume the idea of buying an unlocked one is that you have the freedom to move around mobile service providers ?

Yes you can use any 3G SIM in an unlocked one.

You can unlock the Three MiFi and put on new firmware for free but I actually paid less for the unlocked one than one locked to Three anyway.

To get something cheap off eBay you need to set yourself a maximum price and keep and eye on what auctions are running. How long it takes depends on what price target you have set and how lucky you are. There are plenty of automatic sniping tools out there and that reduces the time you have to spend on the task yourself plus you can cover "silly" end times which tend to be the ones you can get cheap.

I have a contract Vodafone 3G SIM and an HTC Desire on Three. The place I use them most has a good Vodafone signal but a poor Three signal. You can create a hotspot from a laptop but all the software I tried only produces AdHoc hotspots and non-rooted Android won't connect to that so I got the MiFi and it serves both using the Vodafone SIM.
