Can anyone recommend mobile sims to use in Spain?

Options
Hi guys,
potentially a long shot, but my folks are moving to Spain next month, and wondered if anybody knew what the deal was over there with Sims.

ie are you best to get a pay as you go, or a contract, and are they frightfully expensive to use?!

Thanks in advance

Dan

If the move is permanent then I'd expect that, like here, a contract would work out better for any more than minimal use. But I have no idea if there are any cheap deals for contracts, similar to dealer cashbacks here.

The networks are Movistar, Airtel (Vodafone) and Amena.

There is a thread somewhere about cheap calls to UK from Amena, and on the landlines page a couple about Spain too.

apologies didn't see the English button on Movistar

Hi have lived in Spain now for 15 months. A few of us over here so we all got Vodafone SIM cards. The actual SIMs are free but minimum spend is €9.00 per month. There is no Monthly charge so therefore no free minutes or texts. Calls and Texts between Vodafone are quite cheap and Texts back to the UK are €0.60 each.

There are a few other Tarrifs available but this is the one we chose as we dont tend to use them a lot during the daytime during the week.

There are also loads of cheap calling cards available but I have never tried them on my mobile. I have used them on my Landline and you get about 3 hours for €6.00 back to a UK landline which works out at 2p a minute so not bad at all.

It would appear that Vodafone and Amena have free "0800" calls (whatever the actual code is, maybe 900?)

If you want a SIM card before you go (so you can tell friends and family the number), this site sells Spanish ones:

It's usually quite a bit cheaper to buy them there
  • My wife bought a Movistar sim from Gran Canaria last month. The sim cost 25 euros and came complete with 19 euros of credit and also a voucher for the other 6 euros by redemption, thus costing nil.
