Kids area in the Science Museum - our kids would spend a couple of hours there. Did you finds the kids area? They also have a small show which can be good.
Museum of London
Mummies in the British Museum (but it gets very busy)
If they are good at walking, even walking around places like Covent Garden or looking at Big Ben etc., You just need to point things out them.
Tate Modern - kids see the pictures in a way you don't.
Taken our kids when they were 6/7 and 3/4 to these places.I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -

You could have a look at the days out guide, once you've got a tube ticket you can get great 2 for 1 offers on lots of the big London attractions. We did HMS Belfast and Golden Hinde last trip and a boat ride up the Thames. Sorry i can't add the link.0

If you're in the Kensington area then definitely go to the Princess Diana playground behind Kensington Palace and maybe an informal afternoon tea at the Orangery too. Head across the park and hunt for the Peter Pan statue if your child is a fan, and check out the Diana memorial fountain which can be fun for kids on a warm day.
Have you heard of Coram's Fields near the British Museum? It's a 7 acre play park with small animals, where adults are allowed only if they have children in tow. It's really fun and easily accessible. Just along the road is the spiffy Brunswick shopping centre with lots of family friendly restaurants to round off the day. The website is Coramsfields dot org (can't link it sorry)0
