Using Shampoo in the Washing Machine

Yes, you can use hair conditioner instead of fabric conditioner.0

With talk of shampoo as washing liquid, does anyone know if hair conditioner would work as washing conditioner as I've got numerous half empty bottles that didn't really work well on my hair?
Can't see why not. It's a recommended trick to use hair conditioner as fabric conditioner when handwashing silk or wool (both are protein fibres like human hair) so I can't particularly see why that wouldn't extrapolate across the veg fibres like cotton and viscose or synthetics. If you read the ingredients list of toiletry products and cleaning products, there's little to choose between them. Sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate, which is in shampoos, showergets and bodywashes, was invented an a de-greasant for industrial engines btw. I have to give it a miss as it makes my skin itch.:)

Hi All
My question is did you put in the drawer on the machine, or in the drum?
I want to try it as well.

Hiya Bronnie! Glad the idea is catching on. I admitted to this in the great embarrassing moneysaving tips thread last week. It really does work well. If you have stains that might need a little work, apply directly onto the area before sticking in with the load too!:A Every moment is a gift. That's why we call it the present.!:A

Okay then, I shall give it a go, I've already been to the shops this week and didn't need any washing liquid. But I'll certainly check out the cheapest shampoo next time I need some washing liquid.0

However, this week I have been playing around using Sainsbury's Basics Shampoo instead of detergent in my washing machine. The shampoo is 22p for a litre bottle. I thought it might be more suitable for use in an automatic machine as the label states "Less lather..."
Using 50ml costs just over a penny per wash. :T
Wow, we really will do anything to reduce the stash of toiletries! (Private joke from another board thread):D
I've been using the hair/fabric conditioner jollop, and as long as you water it down quite well (6 parts water v 1 part conditioner) its pretty good! Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

i spent 2 days in bed with the sickness virus this week, as it is 'only me' who can use the washing maching I did get out of bed yesterday afternoon to put the washer on
Only had washing liquid for one wash so used Asda smartprice shampoo for the second wash and it is fine, cant see the difference between the two loads
Will definitely use this if I run out again, I used one capful in the drawer and there didn't seem to be any excess lather0 -
Hi all! Sorry, only just got back to the laptop just now! Thanks for all your replies folks. Always a bit of a worry that people might think you're a bit of a nutter posting these ideas
Please scroll back and thank jumblejack at post 16, if you like this idea, having now identified her as the source of my inspiration :TOrkneyStar wrote: »I would worry there would be too much lather.

There is minimal lather even with 100ml, so definitely no rinsing issues.jumblejack wrote: »Hiya Bronnie! Glad the idea is catching on. Thank you! I searched everywhere, but was looking at laundry threads, not the Embarrassing tips thread, hope you don't mind me repeating it, thought it was worth further mention. Thanks for the pre-treatment idea too.
I have been using the lid as a 50ml measure and pouring into the drawer, however, the shampoo is quite thick and clings to the inside of the lid, making a mess when you screw it back on so I have been chucking the lid in the drum too to wash off the residue.
I will use regular washing products when necessary too, but by keeping a couple of bottles of this in the cupboard, I can see me stretching the regular products a long way further. Going to do the bedding tomorrow and it's going to be fine for that!
Anyway, will continue to experiment, at a penny or two a wash, it's definitely worthwhile!0 -
For anybody who's not brave enough to use this fab idea I noticed that in Lidl today they have a box 100 wash-loads of Formil powder on offer for £8.99 I reckon you could go the OS money-miser way and easily get 200 washes out of that. It translates at a potential less that 5 pence a load. I was tempted until I remembered that I still have about five litres of gloop stashed away which cost me about a quid to make. Still, that Formil smells really nice0
