El - A sudden change to lots of legumes like peas, beans, sweetcorn, lentils etc can upset the digestive system a bit if they're used to far less, which can make people feel not quite right. So maybe you need to phase them more gradually into the diet, but other veggies should be OK to balance it a bit more. But then again it could be the new tablets too.

Sorry to hear his new tablets aren't working too well, but good news on the money front.

you make a very valid point see ... i shouldve thought about it tbh ... i have been a veggie for well over a year so i am used to beans peas etc ... but hubby isn't ... have been doing some research into foods that help depression and foods that can make depression worse ... bad carbs can make it worse ... we have been eating alot of bad carbs with this new diet ... so i may have to look at all this again ... simple things like brown bread and brown rice etc instead of white bread and rice ...yes it puts us over the 80p perday .... but that isnt an issue really ... we are trying the 80p per day as an experiment not because we have to

ohhhh in possible excellent news .... was chatting to a guy that i barely know ... ok here's the story of how i know the guy ...

he is a farmer that lives up the hill from us and a few years ago we had a very very bad snow fall that affected the road on which i live ... we were all out snowball fighting with the neighbours and having a laugh ... when a call came through for our neighbour to go to work ... he works the snow plough (at least i know now how the man that drives the snowplough gets to work lol) so we all stopped playing and tried to get his car out but there was not a hope in hell of that happening ... phone calls were made and down pops the farmer with his tractor and he got the neighbour out of the snow ... then he parks the tractor up and joins in the fun ( it was such a great day) ... so ever since then when we see each other we wave and say hello etc

today we saw him again walking back to the farm ... we stopped and had a wee chat ( funnily enough he was a huge drinker but gave it up 12 years ago .. he offerd hubby some sound advice as well yay double bonus) we were chatting about the farm and what he was up to .. i cheekily asked do you have any spare land up there i can grow veggies on cause i have been waiting for ever for an allotment ... he replied " no but i know a man that does ... and he lives in the next street to you " so he is gonna ask the guy and get back to me ...

i love where i live but i cant really grow much due to shadows of our house and other houses close by etc ... if this guy has a spare bit of land that he can let me use then that might solve all my issues

We use a mixture of brown and white rice, sometimes with wild rice too. The wild rice takes the longest, after a while you throw in the brown, and then later on the white. It makes it a slightly 'lighter' mix for people not used to wholegrain rice. You can gradually increase the proportion of the brown if you like.

We use quinoa quite a bit now too, but that's fairly expensive I think.

Oh that's fab news about the potential land :)

Sorry to hear Mr El's tablets aren't working too well, hope things settle soon.

Re the diet - Mr S is not a big fan of wholemeal but we've been getting wholemeal bulgar wheat lately which he does like - bit like brown rice but not as chewy. The plain stuff is good too, much nicer than couscous as it seems to have more flavour. We've got an amazing shop here that sells all sorts of different grains (really cheap too), so if you want to try anything different and can't find it I can always send you a food parcel! ;)

whole meal bulger wheat that is a good option tbh ... wonder if grass roots in glasgow would have it ... have been doing a wee bit more reading about diet and depression ... the link is quite strong particularly for vit b ... it just so happens that with continuous consumption of alcohol the body becomes stripped of vit b which explains why we see people with drink problems walking funny and their hands can be funny as well ... if i cant get any squizz can i get you to send me some up ... or bring it next time your up ? will give you the money for it

    No problem :)

My ex's dad use to drink really excessively, and the doctor put him on vit B supplements to try to prevent too much damage to the brain.. although bless him, he was lovely but I think his brain was way past saving!
