Stainless steel is useless if you have heavy soil. Too flexible. I've got B&Q contractors tools. Heavy but solid as!
  • I've got a Joseph Bentley fork and spade which we got from a Wyevale garden centre. They are really solid and very nice looking too, I think they were about £30 each. They are only used for bog standard garden stuff BUT I know they are strong because a burglar used the spade to successfully smash our UPVC kitchen window with no ill effects to the spade...
this was after he broke 2 trowels trying to smash it (what a muppet, clearly a trowel isn't going to do it!)

My shovel, spade and fork from wickes are coming up to 10 years old.
One of the tines on the fork bent out of alignment slightly this year on the lottie but it still works ok (mostly).

I looked at replacing them and most of the ones i looked at were not as well made (in appearance & feel).
The new wickes ones look pretty ropey in comparison too.
  • Got to go to a garden centre this weekend (swmbo's orders ...lol) so i'll have a looksee at whats available.

Must say that stuff you can buy these days, don't look as well made as the fork and spade my dad used to have.
Anyway have had enough, so am borrowing a rotivator tommorow to dig it over.
