Hi all,
recently recieved my mac code from O2.
I have also closed my BT account (22nd Feb) to which i get the brodband with O2 from and set up another BT account in partner's name with a new phone number.
this line is now active (today) so do I still use the mac code to switch providers??
thanks

As you have no current broadband on the new phone number, the mac is of no use. It is only used when you move providers on the same telephone number.
I feel you have done the wrong thing in cancelling your BT account. As you will not be able to use the mac, O2 will probably keep charging you, you will have to cancel the O2 account and pay and dis-connection costs if applied.
You new number now becomes a new installation for broadband.0 -

yeah sorry mate, i gave O2 my 30 days notice due to end on 2nd March.
i've not give them my new number yet as i was told i have to leave it 24 hrs after the new line becomes active.
The thing is my service hasn't been affected, i thought it would when my BT account closed yesterday!!0 -
I would not bank on your broadband continuing. It may be because you are on LLU, in which case if BT just switch the number to your termination at the exchange, you "MAY" just be able to use the mac code. I think you are going to have to suck it and see.0

The MAC is just an administrative device that allows the order to be placed with OpenReach to connect up the line to the broadband equipment in the exchange or for BTw to change the routing to the correct ISP if it's just resold BT. As it was issued for the old account/number it can't be used and there will be an OpenReach cancellation charge to be paid by the ISP who will doubtless pass it on.0

i've spoke to O2 and given them my new line number. A very helpful gent has now activated my account with the new line number. (email recieved to confirm)
Told me I should have no downtime and that the mac code can still be used to switch before the 2nd March0 -
Unfortunately you are still going to get hit with a £30 cease charge at some point. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Of course the really irksome thing is the line is still connected to the O2 DSLAM so BT Openreach will cop for a cease charge and a connect charge and won't have to do a thing....0
