I have a feeling they are using the same technology used by mobile broadband dongles. What you have is essentially 2 drives in one. The first one (the one that shows as 9.89Mb) is a read-only EEPROM which is factory-loaded with content, whilst the second drive is a bog-standard FlashRAM bashed USB Pendrive.
Try closing-down the window that pops-up in autorun then openning 'my computer' to see how many devices it sees. If it sees 2 devices, right-click on the smaller of the 2 and select properties. This will usually show-up as a CD drive if it is not writable.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I used Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator to erase a memory stick after trying some of the solutions above. HTH

You're right, this is what it does. I shall throw it away and use a proper one.

http://www.hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8614 appears to have various solutions to this sort of problem depending on what hardware the pen drive is using.

Using a Live Cd ubuntu (look for GParted) or Partition Magic delete all partitions and the MBR then make one partition and make it active.
