My Speedtouch broadband modem which I use at home has died on me, its a Thompson Speedtouch 516 V6 adsl model. Its about three years old & dosen't power up any more and smells like something has gone insider it now. I have seen the exact one on Amazon for about £30.00 however I have also seen a this one which is a lot cheaper

is it pretty much the same thing/will it work? don't want to spend a lot of money if I don't need to. Thanks

Your Amazon item is not the same as your original, it is a USB modem and NOT suitable for this modern day.
Here is a similar and cheaper one to your original

or this with wireless as well

if you are looking on Ebay look for
ADSL2+ modem with network cable, minimum of 1 ethernet socket, better if 4, and wireless if you want.0 -
Thanks for that..0

Or just ask your ISP for one. If they are reluctant, a mention of leaving or requiring your MAC will normally secure a free wireless router. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I tried to get Talktalk to replace my Thomson Speedbit modem last week - They supplied it when I joined them, and it seemed/seems to be working fine - except that when I upgraded my operating system to Windows 7, and tried to connect to the web, a 'pop up' page from the Talktalk website appeared to say that the modem was "incompatible with Windows 7" - ( Strange, as I am able to use it if I type in a different URL and work around the 'pop-up' page !)
When I called Talktalk on Feb. 11th, I was cheerily told that a replacement router would be sent to me. - I was delighted, until it failed to arrive within the "seven working days" I was promised. - I called their customer help-line again, and a mystified call centre lady told me that there was nothing on file to show that a new router was dispatched. If I wanted to order one, it would cost me £30 ! Reluctantly I agreed, although I pointed out that I'd been told a "replacement2 for my 'Thomson Speedtouch' was on its way. As this post proves, the old modem seems to be working fine. I feel I've spent money on a new router that I don't need, despite what Talktalk's 'pop-up' says.0 -
You can buy a wireless ADSL router new for £15, you don't need to pay TT for one.
There are presumably no W7 drivers for the old USB modem-it's obsolete, flakey and highly insecure anyway. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Personally I would buy a Netgear DG834G.
I've had a few "domestic" ADSL modem/routers over the years and this has been the best of them with the least problems.
In particular, getting rid of a USB modem seems a good idea.0 -

absolutely agree... USB modems should be ditched as soon as possible. Once you go the modem router route (pardon the pun!) you'll never go back to stinky old USB modems
