Paypal negative balance - can they debit my credit card.

Hi all.

Got a dispute going on with an ebay member. Won't go into the details here as its not got anything to do with my question.

Basically the dispute has put my paypal balance into a negative, not tons but still -£144 is a lot when got no means to pay it back at the moment.

I'm worried that paypal will somehow just take the money out of my bank account.

I've got the direct debit agreement cancelled at my bank, so that will hopefully stop one way.

What I am still worried about is that paypal has my debit card as a secondary payment method on file. I've tried to remove it via paypal but it says I cannot until I pay off my negative balance. I am really worried that paypal is going to use my debit card details to take the money from my bank. I'm limited money wise at the moment due to ill health and simply cannot afford for them to try and take that money.

Hope someone can put my mind at rest, the stress is really not good.

If you are really worried -you could "lose" your debit card and get a new one with a different number issued.

In the situation you've described -yes I could see PayPal using any payment method currently available to get the money back if you lose the dispute

  • Good advice. I'll draw out what I need to keep me going for a week with food shopping and 'lose' the card.

Only way to be 100% I guess.
  • That is dreadful advice.

The best advice I can give is you tell us what the problem is that caused the negative balance. If you are not too late it might get resolved properly.

They will not take the money from you, however they will pass it onto debt collectors who are not known for sticking to the rules, so be prepared to be chased and harrassed for it. Also as soon as the debt collectors get involved the debt will start to increase as they charge for every phone call and every letter.

If it is at all possible it is better to try and sort the debt out now before it becomes unmanageable.

  • Oh I'm not avoiding paying it if I have no choice. The case is quite 50/50 but I worry they will side with the buyer.

I just wan't to make sure they don't take it out when I've not got the means to pay it.
  • If you sent the parcel by trackable means you are covered by Paypals seller protection, what does it say on the transaction with ref to seller protection?.
If we knew the exact problem we could help you more

I hope you realise the implications as far as your eBay account is concerned.
It may not matter to you, at least now, but you will probably have to say goodbye to your ebay account(s), and if you have family member living at the same address using the same connection they6 could be affected.
Not happened to me, but people have come to this and other boards having had their account closed because of someone with same address/IP having had problems with PP.

I take it the case has not yet finalised then.

If so, give some detail and we may be able to help.

I'm sure you have no intention of paying for anything else by Paypal - but my husband got stung when he had a negative paypal balance and paid for something else via paypal. They added the negative balance to the final payment page of the other item he was paying for - and he clicked 'Pay' without checking the total balance. The negative amount, plus the cost of the item he was paying for, was debited from his card. Of course he should have checked the amounts more carefully, so his own fault - but just thought I would mention for the benefit of others reading this thread.

Likewise you can't sell anything on ebay again either as any proceeds in clear the debt first.
