Unidentified network!

Hi, I've had some trouble with my laptop this past week - first I had to pay £130 to have the hard drive replaced and the fan cleaned, and since then I haven't been able to access the wireless internet in my flat. I have no trouble accessing any other wireless internet (like at the library), it's just at my flat I'm having this trouble.

It connects fine to the router and says I'm connected 'local' but it refuses to let me get onto the internet. When I run diagnose and repair, it says 'cannot communicate with primary DNS', so I've tried that thing on the command prompt to flush DNS but it didn't help. I've checked the settings on Ivp4 and Ivp6 and they both say get settings automatically from router. I've tried switching off the router for 5 minutes and turning it back on. I've tried plugging the laptop into the router with a cable, and that worked fine for getting me on the internet but it showed two connections - the wired and wireless, and while the wired could access the internet fine, the wireless refused to budge from 'local'.

I really need the internet to do my uni work, so I'm desperate for any suggestions that could possibly help fix this (I'm on vista btw). Oh, I should mention that everyone else in the flat can access the internet fine through the router, and it's with virgin media if that's relevant.

Thanks in advance

Another thing which may help (I'm not sure), is that when I click on status of connection it shows the following -

    IPv4 connectivity: Local
    IPv6 connectivity: Limited

Others in the flat are accessing the internet through the router fine.

Oh and the network comes up as 'Unidentified network' which it didn't before I had my hard drive replaced.

The first thing that sprung to my mind from your posts is that you have connected to another wireless network thats nearby. Have you done a scan to see if you can find the one you expect?

This may sound obvious, but you are connecting to the right network are you? Maybe your computer is auto connecting to another network.

Disconnect the wireless network it is connected to then re-scan networks again and see if yours appears in the list.

If the hard disk fails again, post here, you could have done it yourself for £35 or less

run the cmd prompt, and do an ipconfig

have you entered the encryption details correctly

Check your firewall isn't blocking the connection.

Thanks to those who've posted so far. I switched off my firewall but it didn't help and definitely got the encryption details correct.

Go into Network and Sharing Centre in Control Panel.
    Then Manage Wireless Networks

    Delete ALL of them.

The go back to connecting to a wireless network and select yours.
