Those that are successful will make money, those that aren't are obviously not very good at it and won't. It's like any celebrity, they either make millions or nothing.
You live in a dreamworld - Most 'successful' authors make very little from writing - you idea that most people are making millions is laughable.0 -

Getting back on topic - I bought a Kindle 3 3G before Christmas and I absolutely love it. I've downloaded a lot of (legit) free books from various sources including Project Gutenberg, and I use the web browser often to access sites like Facebook, GMail, Google Reader, Google Maps, eBay, Toodledo (online to-do lists), etc. It's also useful as a recipe book (but keep it far enough away from the cooker that it doesn't get splashed with oil!), and an electronics reference (I use it to display chip data sheets when tinkering in the garage). In the last couple of weeks I've also started using it to play music and play minesweeper.
The screen is great, the battery life great (if you don't use the wi-fi/3G too much), the functionality is fantastic, and it was good value. As others have pointed out, you're not necessarily tied in to buying books from Amazon - I haven't bought a single one yet.
The Sony PRS-650 has a touch screen and a memory card slot, but costs a lot more and doesn't have wi-fi/3G.0 -

Piracy will be minimal for those writers that aren't successful and so insignificant for those that are, that it's not worth arguing about.
It's just greed and rather than the 10 million from a book and movie, they want the whole 11 million. Do you some how not thing 10 million is enough for one person?
Your analogue is flawed, if I could copy petrol and food like I can mp3's and documents, then yes I would.
My work has been extensively pirated, to the extent that there are probably more pirated copies out there than legitimate ones. Not that either is a huge number, but that has an inordinate impact on my ability and desire to create more. So, as I have nowhere near 10 million, do you think it is wrong to steal from me? Where do you draw the line? 1 million? I don't have that either. 10 thousand? At what point do you start "arguing about it"? Don't bother answering: the questions are rhetorical, and even if they weren't I doubt I'd get a considered answer.
In any case, as steveeeee says, this is off topic and so I won't reply any more apart from to say that I hope one day you get a chance to argue your personal philosophy on the morals of theft in the courts.Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.0 -

It still remains THEFT and your response to my analogy is just you saying "If I could STEAL with a reasonable chance of getting away with it I would." You have defined yourself by your actions and no matter how you imagine yourself, you are not a modern day Robin Hood.

I doubt I could convince a so called writer or even anyone on a thread where the majority of people actual buy books.
If you or anyone were any good at what you do, the effect of piracy would be insignificant compared to the overall return. If it wasn't this way, there would simply be no authors as no one would bother and we both know this is not the case.
If they don't want piracy, they should lower the price so everyone can afford it. £6 book selling at £1, selling a million copies is still £1 million, which in my book (pardon the pun) is plenty rumuneration for their work. But they won't as it's greed.
This is off topic and I too won't continue this further in the interests of the thread0 -
Theft? Just common sense - I'll never buy an ebook.

I bought an w book reader in January from London As I travell a lot I take many books with me.
The one I bought is a jet book Mini Nice size, but it took a time for me to find out how to download. I finally did it and like everything it is easy when you know how. the problem is the free books are not really my type and it costs about £5.00 to download my kind of book, and I usally swap or pay a small amount at car book sales.:Afor paper back books of kind.
So Yes I have poems on it and some unknown authors but I will still be taking my own hard back b ooks as well when I go away
But I do like it and as for actually travelling around I find it quite useful It cost me £85.00 only0 -
I typically always hunt for bargains or for something that does what a branded item does.., but at half the price. But I will buy them from places i know I can return through in case something isn't quite as stated (recently bought a steam cleaner for £89 from amazon that is as good in many ways as a polti priced more than twice that, and has some of the features of the even more expensive steamers)..
BUT I have to admit, I am getting an Ipad2. Shrivelling my insides at the cost.., but when my library only 'lends' epub books, I had to take the hint (and lets face it, the Ipad2 does rather more than just let u read ebooks lol). I was impressed at how many free ebooks are offered thru the itunes shop as well. I am a total bookwork (and a bit of a geek, I have to confess, I do like my gadgets). I am also looking forward to being able to get online when I want to inspite of having a 15 year old. Even he can't use both my pc and the ipad at the same time lol. I needed something that I can use on the go.., that wasn't as big as a laptop (and hopefully a bit more reliable than a laptop).0
