Overheard in Poundworld today.

Was in there getting some choccie biccies/kit kats for the workman whos coming tommorrow (to try to prevent my toilet from falling into the flat below) when i overheard the manager asking a young lad to stay till quite late tonight. Then she said "Im afraid we cant pay you but we will give you a bottle of wine or something for doing it" Then i think she realised that he couldnt drink due to his religion and said "oh thats right you cant can you" Then she said that all their jobs could be on the line if he didnt stay tonight cos the store had to look a certain way and be a certain standard for the Area Managers visit. Then she reluctantly said "ok i will ask the Area Manager if you can be paid" but it didnt sound like she could promise anything.
They are asking him to stay late at very short notice (i overheard this conversation at 5.15pm) and are not even sure they can pay him!

sounds more like a manager trying to keep wage costs down to make their budget look good.

Do you have a point? Many people work over their allocated hours every single day!
    Gone ... or have I?

Yes, it's like a company like this thinks their workers do it for charity or something, what is it with them?

thank god that most employers have moved on from the "you're lucky to have a job" attitude. Thank god for unions ... and i hope he said no!

Very likely this will take him below NMW. I don't feel very placid about that.

    Thank god for the Unions???

As much as when employees do need union protection from some companies, where I work the union is destrying the company and when it goes under it will be down to overzelous union shop stewards and weak !!!! management who allowed themselves to be bullied by them.....

Unions are not always a good thing in my experience!

    G
One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:
  • This is nothing new.

In the modern world, many companies and their managers are using the old "lucky to have a job" tactic to scare workers and make them compete against eachother.

I know a company in which your overtime is practically open ended and there is no extra pay for it. It can involve working any time 24/7.

The same company has been cutting staff for years

The same company chooses to pay or not to pay people, giving some special payments whilst not paying others.

Sometimes they just make unauthorised deductions from your pay whilst still paying others

They like to play divide and conquer ,pitting employee against employee

This is a major global FTSE 100 company.

As well as making themselves look good because the store isnt up to scratch and they havent been doing their job properly.

I indeed work over my hours but I feel I am paid well and treated well.
