  • When i worked in retail i used to get my days off changed with no notice as well. For instance i used to get told on a Tuesday at 5.30pm (the last minute) that my day off had been changed to the next day (Wednesday) instead of Thursday so any appointments that had been booked for the Thursday be they dentist ,doctor ,hair or others had to keep being cancelled. The following week she would say my day off was a Tuesday then after i would rebook the appointment(s) she would change it AGAIN at short notice so likr Ceridwen says people who had nothing to do with the employer were being mucked about. And yes this was a minimum wage retail job.
  • My understanding is that compared to the rest of europe we work very long hours. To me this says we don't work effectively or efficiently.

Quite agree - I saw one UK retail industry commentator state that we have over a million under 25's employed in the sector currently. I wonder what proportion of those are part-timers or zero-hours contracted under 18's.

Treat them like dirt and they will learn to treat others like dirt, and as they "progress" from stackers to till work to "supervisors" and "managers" and down the road to laptop sales and mobile phones and from there to banks and "financial services" (yes I kid you not!) then who then gets taken for a ride ?

You guessed it, we all do :(

I know, all those 'suckers' working for free and ending up being promoted to management when their hard work and efforts are recognised - utter idiots! ;)

That's if there's the opportunity for promotion there.

There is a difference between putting extra hours in for a good company/to better your prospects/to help a work friend out and working for free for a company that treats you like a robot and tries to get away with as much as they can.

Like myself, I cover EVERY SINGLE DAY i am asked to, whether I'm covering for someone who is ill or on holiday, or covering at a store 20 miles away (no petrol money) or swapping days to help the company..and then I ask to swap ONE day.....No you can't. Well that's not on. And guess what? I won't be helping the company out anymore. Have employers never heard of MOTIVATION?!

A lot of us are working for employers who suck us dry because they know there's not a lot of other jobs we could leave them for. They also know that we can't take legal action because none of us can afford it!
Trying to spread calmness, understanding and optimism on MSE :)
