Advice on Chocolate lab for rehoming

Hey all,

Ive recieved some good advice from here before so I thought I would try my luck again.. Anyways here goes.....

Im currently looking for a dog, but this post is about my friend who has been looking through various adverts/on site for a dog approx 1 year old... anyways she came across this advert..

http://www.adtrader.co.uk/pets-and-animals/dogs/roxy-is-a-chunky-12-month-old-pedigree_900442_cpn.html

Now im new to the dog owning life so I couldnt give her much advice.

From the advert what sort of questions would you be asking the current owner ? and I was wondering if it possible to take the dog to a vets to be checked out before she commits?????

ANy help much appreciated

Anyone who cared anything whatever about their dog (or any animal really) would not be trying to flog it in the local ad trader for £250! Surely their primary - in fact only - concern should be to get a d=good home. The fact that they are not going through a rescue centre suggests the cash is more important than a good home. Even then they are takeing the P. I have had 2 labs, both with no papers from working parents and they cost me £100 and £150 respectively. Without papers they are not a pedigree!

Sorry it does not help you much OP, but I felt I had to comment. Tell your friend to go to a rescue or if she wants a specific breed, then to go to a breed specific rescue (check through google).

Isn't it sad that poor dog is up for sale because it 'won't fit in' with their house moving.

They may have lost the original papers but they should have some kind of 'sevice history', recent vet bills etc. You'll need to check when the dog had her boosters, worm tablets etc.

If absolutely nothing can be provided then go see the dog and explain to them you would like to take it for a checkup and the cost of the checkup to come off the bill.

It's a little overweight so maybe not a hugeamount of excercise.

If your friend buys it, he/she is gonna have to give that dog a whole load of attention as it will be upset to leave its home. :(

To be honest I would be worried about behavioural issues as much as the dog's health? Which could possibly be why they are getting rid?

Tell your friend they would be better rescuing a dog it would then have been properly assessed and they would have the back up / support of the rescue.

Edit: lots of Labs on here:

My choc lab Max is a year old and I wouldn't sell him if someone offered me a million pounds.

He's a TAD bigger than the pics below when we had him on the first day.

ROXY IS A CHUNKY 12 MONTH OLD PEDIGREE CHOC LAB ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NO PAPERS FOR HER. SHE IS HOUSE TRAINED,FANTASTIC WITH CHILDREN AND LIKES TO PLAY WITH OTHER DOGS, WE ARE REGRETTABLY HAVING TO FIND HER A NEW HOME BECAUSE WE ARE MOVING HOUSE AND CANT TAKE HER WITH US.

Ok this is not a pedigree, no papers, no pedigree you want to see proof.

Chunky 12 months old...... lack of exercise?

I think this is one of those awwww doesn't she look cute.. and once she no longer looks like a puppy she has to go.

We have had our choc lab for three months now and bought him from pets4u for £200 - he was being sold because his owner had changed to work long shifts and it wasn't fair he stayed n his own for 12 hours at a time. The ad I replied to had a lot more substance to it though and was well written, we emailed over the course of a few days before arranging a visit at their home.

They asked me as many questions as I asked them and when we met they told me they had disregarded people straight away for various reasons such as never owned a dog before and getting one might be 'nice'!

I asked; Why they were rehoming (as above), Vets history (vacs card was there and had all vets details on to contact), behaviour, age, photo's and to see parents when visiting etc.

I decided that if I had any doubt I would walk away but when I saw him it was an easy decision, he was obedient, house trained and looked incredibly fit and healthy and his current owner said she was also happy for him to come with us - she asked if I would let her know how he settled after a few days which I did.

We have papers but it was not important and having no papers does not mean they are not a pedigree, it means that they have not been registered with the Kennel Club, both parents could be pedigree but you have to ask if it important to you whether the dog is or may not be? I have not bothered to re-register our lad in my name as it isn't important to us and he isn't going anywhere or being bred from.

It is worth knowing that labs can have hip and eye issues - the piccie looks like Roxy could be quite a heavy set dog and it also suggest that a bit more exercise could be needed, it is not good for any dog to be overweight but with them being prone to a bit of hip problem it is not a good idea for them to carry extra weight.

Ask lots of questions via email, ask for more pics and visit the dog - if it feels right you will know but don't let heart rule head.

Good luck - I love labs and after our Yellow lab Solo had to be put to sleep a year and a half ago at 15 1/2 I was heartbroken but we now have Strider and love him to bits - he is great with our girls :)

thanks for all the advice/ comments.

After speaking to her, she is def looking a lab around a year old.

Concerning the time etc she can spend on the dog.. the shift patterns that her and her partner work mean that there in only 1 day in a month where the dog will be left on its own (approx 6hrs)

My main issue is they have another small dog which i know will need to be introduced etc. I was of the opinion that a rescue place would be better suited to the mood of their dogs and if needs be there can be a little more time taken with introductions etc.

Just really trying to make her see that are perhaps better options than just buying a dog that they really dont no much about, and will have limited time to find out its personality etc. But I think its gonna be hard to make them see that.. :(

That's all that you can do really - at the end of the day if she doesn't look into it properly she will have to end up living with the consequences?
