By any chance, has anyone ever heard of an area called Chelsworth in Suffolk? It is absolutely stunning and the only concern I have is that it's about 12 miles or so from Stowmarket, which I heard was really rough. Is 12 miles far enough away from there?

Can't really comment, I'm afraid. Although I think 12 miles away from an iffy area is far enough.

Last weekend i took a drive along the A12 in Suffolk and I passed some very pretty looking villages. Suffolk Coastal district is quite saught after. :)

I'll probably waffle - but hope that what I have to say is ok - apologies in advance for the length of post though!

I don't know Wymondham, apart from driving through it.
Long Stratton is awful - commuter belt/modern town.
I wouldn't choose to live at Acle - it is on the end of a daul carriageway, and near Great Yarmouth (which is awful). It does indeed have a travelodge, but not a lot of anything else - it's the sort of place you pass through. It also would take longer to get into Norwich from there than from somewhere considerably further out.
Aylsham has HUGE new estates on the outside recently built - and still building - literally hundreds of houses. It is a nice town, we lived nearby in Marsham for a while - it has a small Tesco, a small market, a couple of lovely pubs that do food, and the local auction house for this area on Monday. It has one of the best High Schools in the area.
Easton is home to the Norfolk Show Ground - and grinds to a halt regularly.
Thorpe St Andrew is an 'outskirt' town - has as huge sainsbury, but can be quite a drive into town if you are going into Norwich.
Holt is overpriced and nice to visit. There is one budgens (small) and about 50 charity and gift shops. You regularly can't park there, and it's full of visitors - it's lovely to visit, but I think would be very inconvenient to live in.

School wise Reepham is good, Aylsham, Broadland (hoveton/wroxham). Paston Sixth Form College takes from Norwich and north of it, and is excellent. Dereham is also said to be good I believe.

The train service north of the city comes up through Salhouse, Wroxham, Worstead, North Walsham, Gunton Park, Cromer and Sheringham.

It hits the coast at Cromer and goes through to Sheringham. The rest are inland.

Worstead is a beautiful village (history of weaving) and is your typical country village with a pub and country show once a year - 20 minutes or so from Norwich by car, less by train.

For villages I don't think you can beat Worstead, East Ruston, Honing, Bridgate (sp?) South Walsham, Swanton Abbot...... these are all easy links into Wroxham, and easy links to the station at Worstead. The other side of the county near Aylsham has Reepham and that area - but no rail links.

For coastal properties you don't want to go any further south than Mundesley (10 minutes from rail station at North Walsham/Gunton Park) - from there North is a 'nicer area' - Cromer properties are increasing in value - Sheringham is nicer - Wells is LOVELY but as you go further around the coast it takes longer to get into town.

Some areas in norwich are further out of town time-wise than one of the villages much further north because there are poor transport links or congealed driving at times, and the main roads absolutely get busy with visitors through the summer. The coast in this area is lovely - but anywhere north of norwich is like going back in time, the pace of life is slower, people have time, there are no areas known for crime or huge anti-social problems.

I moved to North Norfolk over seven years ago, and venture down the A11 occasionally, but I try not to - I shan't be moving back into the mainland anytime soon.

If you have specific questions or things you'd like to help me narrow it down I'll try and let you know any local knowledge I have.

I used to live in Long Stratton, access to the Southern bypass (A47) is great, however the A140 does run right through it, and is busy (very busy) at peak times. If you do live near the road it is noisy at night, in a Section 59 anti-social motoring kind of way, loud stereo, big exhausts, high revs etc....

Wymondham is nice, there is a couple of new developments which have probably doubled the size of the town, good rail and road links to Norwich, A11 can be congested at times.

Thorpe St Andrew is nice, and really not that far from the city centre, other areas to consider might be Torpe End, which has a small village feel but is very close to the city via Plumstead road.
