the benefits of refilling vary from printer to printer

canon cli-8 cartridges are simple to refill you can also purchase a after market chip resetter for these cartridges for £5 which would then reset the micro chips aswell

now most hp cartridges especially the hp 57 are a totally different ball game especially if you are refilling the colour cartridge

simple reason being they are tri colour ink cartridges which means 3 colours in the one cartridge

also the print head is attached to the cartridge where the canon cartridge is just a ink tank

most people think you just pierce a few holes and squirt ink in the cartridge ok this may work for the black cartridge but not for the colour because you never use the same ammount of colour so that is why people experience spillage
plus you also need to clean the cartridge prior to filling incase of blockages in the print head

my advice is always this if you are printing pictures that you want to keep or frame use genuine if you print scrap work or documents then use refills
  • I bought one of these to try last week for my Canon Pixma ip1600. I had never tried a refill kit before, but the price of cartridges seems to be rising. Printer is a good few years old, but still works well. The kit was easy to follow. You just have to take your time and ensure you flush the syringe out well. The kit says it works for over 750 inkjet printers and faxes including Epson D78 and R265 cartridges, whatever they are. I had a good result with my printer and I reckon I could refill about 10 times for the outlay of £8.99. Worth a try, but I don't use mine to print photo prints, just so you know.

I bought a supercheap CISS from buytech (before they appear to have vanished, sadly) - it cost a staggering £8 with refill inks at 69p for 100ml (I can see their margins must have been tiny - other people are selling similar CISS for £80!!!) and it works a treat. If you print a lot, see if you can find a cheapo CISS, the ink lasts for an eternity and is certainly good enough for my photos.

well for the last 10+ years i have used Epson printers and apart from the original cartridges than come with a new printer i have always used compatibles. currently i have a P50 and get 2 full sets (12 cartridges) for £7.50 and these are just as good as originals and my local air ambulance service takes the empty cartridges
