They should have a free recall, there are so many faulty units.

Not sure how they have got away with it for so long.

Thanks for all your replies. After googling it there seems to be a real problem with this part. I am going to take my car to BMW for a diagnostic test and then will hopefully receive a goodwill gesture from Mini UK, as most people seem to have done despite age or mileage. I have also tried alot of the other options mentioned and most of them either want my existing pump to refurbish and then send back to me, or I have to send my pump to them after it has been replaced. Thanks again for the help.

BMW Mini's suffer horrendously with the power steering pump failure

Hi, I agree with you. It has been reported to VOSA but they claim it isn't dangerous apparently, despite reports of cars mounting pavements and roundabouts. I've got my car booked in for tuesday so we will see what happens. Thanks again.

Perhaps someone should ask VOSA if the vehicle would pass an MOT with a faulty pump.

I thought all recalls were politically motivated? Or is that just in the good ol'US of A?

Hi, I hadn't thought of that, I've just e-mailed VOSA to find out.

Exactly the same with Vauxhall's Meriva power steering. VOSA maintain that as the car can be brought safely to a stop without power steering then that's fine! So not a safety issue meriting a recall. It's then the owner's responsibility not to drive until it's fixed and keep their car maintained.
Mine failed (Meriva) when negotiating a sharp bend, if I hadn't had arms like Popeye then a ditch would have been explored.
Apparently if the power steering fault light was illuminated and contrary to VOSA's "not a safety issue" then that's a safety issue and a MOt failure!
BMW need to be embarrassed by Watchdog, like Vauxhall were, before they'll do anything.

I've just got back from the BMW garage after taking my car in for a diagnostic test. They didn't bother doing the test as the noise was enough! They contacted Mini UK and they are going to pay 100% of parts and labour for a new power steering pump. I'm quite shocked as I thought they would refuse to pay anything, my car is a 2003 plate, no full service history and has done 60,000 miles. So a great result and I didn't even have to pay for a diagnostic test!:)

ps. Inactive, no the car wouldn't have passed the MOT according to VOSA.

Great result, well done and thanks for the info.

It looks like they are just replacing the faulty units on cars that are being returned to them, like yours, instead of doing a full recall.

IMO they should do a full recall.
