My wife has just bought a second hand car for £3,495 from a used car dealer in Bristol.

The day after taking possession, an independent mechanic told my wife that the car needed a new clutch and that the driver's seat rails were worn out and needed replacing.

Find a new mechanic. Drivers seat rails do not wear out ever. I've driven wagons with over 1,000,000 miles on who have different drivers twice a day 7 days a week and the rails have not been worn. I've owned 40 year old cars and the rails weren't worn out.

I think you need to be more worried about the independent mechanic trying to take you for a ride than the dealership.
    1) The independent mechanic was my wife's son.
Doesn't mean he's competent and even the most useless mechanic can sound knowledgeable to someone who doesn't even know what a dip stick is.

Hmmm - hardly the best diagnosis is it?

Sounds like it may have been a Driving School car at some time in it's life.
  • The independent mechanic was my wife's son

    I'm guessing he's a tyre fitter then...

They don't wear out, period. I've worked as a mechanic and never ever heard of it or seen it. They simply cannot wear out in the average lifetime of the car even if you move it 10 times a day. What can happen is the locking mechanism fail due to a broken linkage rod, clip or return spring but you'd not be able to move it backwards or forwards or you'd find one side moves whilst the other doesn't, resulting in the seat being twised.

Land Rover Freelanders are not your average driving school car.

No, a time-served, qualified mechanic in his mid-thirties having worked firstly for an independent general garage and currently as Maintenance/Transport Manager for a fleet of delivery vehicles.

I don't trust you when you use that word! The last time you used it, you said an independent mechanic had given the car a going over, and the "independent" mechanic turned out to be your wife's son!

It seems strange to me that your wife's son is saying this, that and the other is wrong with the car, but neither you or your wife have noticed a problem with it?

Be prepared for the garage to deny one or more of the problems... something does not sound right to me here...
